Ben Shelton has been taken to five sets in all of his three matches at Wimbledon 2024.

Jannik Sinner has kept the chances of a potential semi-final showdown with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz alive after a third-round win over Miomir Kecmanovic at Wimbledon 2024 on Friday night. The Spaniard had pulled through after a five-set victory over Frances Tiafoe earlier in the day.

The Italian World No. #1 posted a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over Kecmanovic in just 96 minutes to make the fourth round for a third consecutive year. Sinner, the top seed at this year’s Wimbledon, produced some of his best tennis to overcome Matteo Berrettini in the second round. The 22-year-old Sinner served 11 aces and 35 winners en route to his third-round win.

Sinner faces Ben Shelton in the fourth round after the American overcame Denis Shapovalov in a battle between two left-handers. Shelton prevailed in a rain-delayed match that was halted on Friday after just five games.

Shelton trumped in five sets for a 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win in three hours and four minutes over his northern neighbour. Among the audience was eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, who watched on as the 21-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia, became the first American left-hander to make the fourth round at SW19 since John McEnroe in 1992.

Jannik Sinner vs Ben Shelton preview

Ben Shelton survived two opening-round matches against qualifiers, both lasting the full five sets. The opening round match was against Italian Mattia Bellucci, and the second was against South African Lloyd Harris. The young American was put through the wringer again in the third round by 2021 semifinalist Denis Shapovalov. In all three rounds, Shelton was forced to rally from losing the opening set.

Sinner had a straightforward opening round win against German Yannick Hanfmann before having to tough it out against fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini in a four-set affair that included tiebreaks in three of them, including the decider.

Prediction

It will be advantage Jannik Sinner in his fourth career confrontation with Ben Shelton and the second of the season after Indian Wells. The reigning Australian Open champion has proven himself a formidable opponent on grass, bagging his maiden win on the surface in Halle last month.

The Italian is five from five in recent matches, while Shelton has won four of the last five played. Sinner is 12-3 on the lawns of Wimbledon. Shelton, who made his SW19 main draw debut last season, is on 4-1. The forthcoming match will be the first between Jannik Sinner and Ben Shelton on grass.

Reinforcing Sinner’s grass court credentials is his win at the Terra Wortmann Open, also his first as World No. #1 on the ATP Rankings. Shelton turned up at the Queen’s Club, Stuttgart Open, and the Mallorca Championships — all grass court tournaments in June. Sinner is 8-0 on grass this year, in contrast to Shelton, who trails at 4-3.

However, the 14th-ranked Shelton appears to have transformed himself at the grass-court major, with gritty performances signifying his ability to hold his own. In Sinner, he will be facing one of the cleanest hitters of the game, and achieving victory will require the American to come out swinging.

Result: Jannik Sinner to win in four sets.
