Jannik Sinner is aiming for his second Grand Slam title this year.

A spicy Wimbledon 2024 second round clash awaits us, as two Italians will take centre-stage, with first seed Jannik Sinner taking on former runner-up Matteo Berrettini.

Sinner has started out well in London, defeating World Number #85 Yannick Hanfmann of Germany 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. While he would have loved to start off with a straight-sets win, he would be happy to have got some momentum which he would be wanting to carry forward. Sinner’s best ever performance at Wimbledon came last year: a semi-final finish. With his current form (which is testified by his 38-3 win-loss record in 2024), he would be looking to further improve upon that.

On the other hand, Berrettini was in the form of his life a couple of years ago and ranked #6 in the world at one point, but his rise was halted by injuries and bad form. After falling outside the top 100 in the men’s singles rankings in 2023, Berrettini has started picking pace this year. He is currently ranked #65 in the world.

Berrettini too started of his campaign by dropping a set against World Number #575 Marton Fucsovics of Hungary, winning 7-6(3) 6-2 3-6 6-1. He had an injury scare, needing on-court treatment for his back, but eventually managed to secure victory. Having lost to Serbian legend Novak Djokovic in the final of Wimbledon 2021 after winning the first set, the Italian will be looking to regain lost glory.

Jannik Sinner vs Matteo Berrettini preview

While Jannik Sinner has been rated highly for a long time, 2024 finally seems to be his year. He won the Australian Open: his first Grand Slam title and reached the semifinals of the French Open. He also won the Rotterdam Open and Miami Open. After the French Open, he aced the grass challenge too, winning the 2024 Halle Open, becoming just the eighth player to win his debut tournament as a World Number #1.

To summarize, Sinner is in absolutely rollicking form this year. Having lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals last year, he would want to go all the way this time.

Berrettini experienced a peak in form in 2021 and 2022, but his troubles started in 2023, with him struggling to string together a set of good performances. He then had to retire in the second round of the US Open, putting an early end to his season. He made his return at the 2024 Arizona Tennis Classic, reaching the final.

He won the 2024 Grand Prix Hassan II: his first title since 2022. Due to illness, he had to skip much of the remainder of the clay season, including the Roland Garros. He again returned with a bang, commencing his grass season, defeating the likes of Lorenzo Musetti enroute to the final at Stuttgart. He couldn’t replicate it at Halle, crashing out in the second round.

Interestingly, Berrettini has revealed that he and Sinner have a good relationship which has been strengthened in the recent months. He further said that it was Sinner’s ‘miracle’ in the Australian Open, which gave him hope during his injury.

It will definitely be worth watching if Berrettini, on his comeback trail, can give a tough fight to his good friend and compatriot.

Prediction

Jannik Sinner is one of the favourites to win the title this year. The World Number #1 is known to be one of the hardest hitters and has been playing so elegantly with such a calm demeanour, that many on social media have expressed that Sinner reminds them of Swiss maestro Roger Federer

Berrettini, who is an aggressive player with a strong forehand, is playing his first Grand Slam this year. He is yet to settle fully into his strides after being on the sidelines for a long duration.

Playing each other for the first time on grass, an interesting match is on the cards. Break points will be at a premium, with two players with very strong serves set to clash.

Sinner will enter as the favourite to clinch the match. But Berrettini knows the formula to succeed in this tournament and is sure to put up a fight.

Result: Jannik Sinner to win in four sets.
