Jasmine Paolini equals Serena Williams's eight-year-old record at 2024 Wimbledon

Jasmine Paolini will become only the third Italian woman to be ranked in the top 5 in tennis history.
Italy’s Jasmine Paolini has become the first tennis player since Serena Williams in 2016 to reach the final of the French Open and the semifinals of Wimbledon in the same year.
Jasmine Paolini, who reached the final of the 2024 French Open with wins over Elena Rybakina and Mirra Andreeva, is enjoying a breakthrough campaign in 2024.
Before 2024, Paolini never reached the second round of the Grand Slam. However, in 2024, she reached the fourth round in Melbourne. Later, the final in Paris and she’s currently in the semifinals in London. She won the Dubai Tennis Championships in February, earlier this year after she defeated Anna Kalinskaya in the final.
She also won the women’s doubles title at the 2024 Italian Open alongside compatriot Sara Errani. The Italian duo also reached the final of the 2024 French Open but they suffered a disappointing loss against Coco Guaff and Katerina Siniakova.
She has continued her astounding form at the grass-court Grand Slam, as she has defeated the likes of Emma Navarro, Madison Keys, Bianca Andreescu and more to secure a spot in the last four. In addition to that, she has become the first Italian woman in the Open Era to reach the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships.
Interestingly, Jasmine Paolini is also the oldest tennis player to reach their first semi-finals in two different Grand Slams during the same season since Betty Stove in 1977. Moreover, she has also moved up into the top five rankings with her incredible performance at the ongoing Wimbledon Championships.
She will become the first Italian woman to reach the top 5 since Sara Errani in 2013. In the semifinal, she will face Croatia’s Donna Vekic, who stunned qualifier Lulu Sun in the last round.
Vekic has also displayed commendable tennis in recent matches. She’s only the third Croatian player in the Open Era to make a Women’s Singles Grand Slam semi-final after Iva Majoli (Roland Garros 1997) and Mirjana Lucic (Wimbledon 1999 and Australian Open 2017).
