Lorenzo Musetti will face Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the semifinals on July 12.
Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti got emotional during the post-match interview on Wednesday after he defeated Taylor Fritz to reach his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal.
Lorenzo Musetti defeated America’s Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships in a five-set marathon. Musetti lost the initial set 3-6; however, he was quick to make a comeback and win the second set on a tiebreak.
Nevertheless, the 22-year-old Italian exhibited his tennis prowess in the third and the fifth set. Taylor Fritz had no answers to the Italian’s outrageous forehead and precise winners. The American lost the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. With the loss, the ATP World No. 14 now has a win-loss record of 0-4 in Grand Slams quarterfinals.
Nevertheless, it was a huge moment for the 22-year-old Italian, who’s going to represent his country at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. Musetti couldn’t hold back his tears as he looked towards his family during the interview. He stated that he always dreamt of this moment.
He said, “I’ve been dreaming of this moment since I was a kid. I always had a really beautiful family that always supported me in chasing my dream. It’s tough to speak.”

Next up, the 22-year-old will face 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, who will be playing his 13th Wimbledon semifinal. Djokovic’s quarterfinal opponent, Australia’s Alex de Minaur, withdrew from the tournament after he suffered a hip injury during his fourth-round match against Frenchman Arthur Fils.
Musetti’s compatriot and 2024 Paris Olympics doubles partner, Jannik Sinner, suffered a disappointing loss against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals. Thus, Daniil Medvedev will be playing a replay of last year’s Wimbledon semifinals against three-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz.
