Sumit Nagal has lost four of his last five matches on the Tour.
Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal talked about his plans for Wimbledon preparation after he was eliminated in the first round at the 2024 French Open on Monday.
After 2019, Sumit Nagal became the first Indian to earn a spot in the main draw of Roland-Garros earlier this year. After a decent performance against Holger Rune at the Monte-Carlo Masters, the Indian decided to take a three-week break for recovery.
He returned at the ATP Bordeaux Challengers, where he suffered a disappointing 6-2, 6-2 loss against Harold Mayot. He later played at the ATP 250 Geneva Open and met Novak Djokovic. At the same tournament, he lost to Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 7-6, 6-3 in the first round.
Thus, he entered the 2024 French Open with limited matches on clay. In the first round, he faced Russia’s Karen Khachanov. Sumit Nagal failed to answer Khachanov’s aggression in the first two sets, with the scoreline reading 6-2, 6-0.

However, the Indian star put up a strong fight in the third set, also breaking the Russian’s serve once. With the scores tied at 6-6, the set was forced into a tiebreak, which was eventually won by Karen Khachanov 7-5.

After the match, the 26-year-old stated that he would play a couple of clay tournaments before shifting his focus to the third Grand Slam of the year, Wimbledon. He said, “I will play in the Heilbronn & Perugia Challengers on clay next. Then a week of training on grass before playing Wimbledon.”
The Heilbronn Challengers is scheduled to take place from June 3 to 9. Meanwhile, Perugia Challengers will take place between June 10 to 16. Thus, Nagal will have a couple of weeks to prepare for Wimbledon, which is scheduled for July 1.
