After Marketa Vondrousova, Barbora Krejcikova is the second Czech star to win Wimbledon title.
Barbora Krejcikova won her second Grand Slam singles title over Jasmine Paolini with 13 main draw appearances between winning the French Open in 2021 and Wimbledon 2024. The Czech World No. #25 regained her composure after losing the second set to defeat Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Following the title run by Marketa Vondrousova last season, Krejcikova’s triumph marks the first time since 2008 (Venus Williams) and 2009 (Serena Williams) that two players with the same nationality have won consecutive singles titles at the Championships.
Krejcikova raced to a 5-1 lead and wrapped up the opening set 6-2 in 37 minutes. Paolini found her groove in the second set to turn the table on the Czech, 2-6 in 38 minutes. It was all down to the third set. The Czech won a crucial break of serve in the seventh game of the decider.
Looking to stay in the match, Paolini fought off two match points in the decider before Krejcikova got her fairytale ending with a deep serve that the Italian could not return after one hour and 56 minutes of game time.
The newly crowned Wimbledon champion converted three break points through the match. Six aces and 28 winners also flowed from the Czech player’s racquet.
Krejcikova, ranked WTA No. #32, is the second lowest ranked player in the history of Wimbledon after compatriot Marketa Vondrousova, who won last year with a ranking of No. #42. The Czech will knock on the doors of the WTA Top 10 with a career-high of No. 11 when the revised rankings are out.
Paolini, too, is poised for a rankings boost, leapfrogging Jessica Pegula to take over as World No. #5 on the WTA Rankings.
Krejcikova is the fourth player from her country to win the women’s Wimbledon title in the open era. The others on the list are Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova and last year’s unseeded champion Marketa Vondrousova. Legends of the women’s game, Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova were among the spectators to Krejcikova’s match-winning effort.
