The Wimbledon 2024 women’s singles event featured an impressive total of 797 aces.
The Wimbledon 2024 saw a new women’s singles champion for the eighth consecutive time, thereby gaining the title of the most unpredictable tennis tournament. The tournament had no shortage of surprises and upsets along with incredible thrilling matches, with most of them more often than not going to the wire, including the semi-finals and the finals.
Coming into the Championships as a 31st seed and on the back of an injury, Barbora Krejcikova’s remarkable victory must be celebrated for years to come. She knocked out several “favorites” on her way, including 11th seed Danielle Collins in the fourth round, former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals, 2022 Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina in the semis, and 7th seed Jasmine Paolini in the finals.
Her tremendous ability to keep fighting till the end, incredible footwork and defense, along with tremendous resoluteness and composure, aided her in her tough path to victory. This was her second Grand Slam win, with the first coming back in 2021 when she won the Roland Garros.
The final match was nothing short of a pendulum swinging from one end to the other, with the Czech dominating the first set and the Italian making an incredible recovery in the second before both hit their straps, with Krejcikova eventually claiming the third. The grass courts of Wimbledon favor fast, low-bouncing serves, making aces an extremely important asset to possess.
Players with strong serves can not only dominate their service games and keep points short but also put significant pressure on opponents, disrupting their rhythm and forcing them to take more risks during return games. Historically, statistics suggest that having the ability to hit aces goes a long way toward helping win Wimbledon titles. The Czech-American legend Martina Navratilova, who has won the most number of Wimbledon titles (9 times), was a master in this regard.
Let’s have a look at the top 5 players who hit the most aces in the 2024 Wimbledon Championships:
5. Barbora Krejcikova: 26
Like several previous Wimbledon Champions, the 2024 women’s singles winner too finds herself a spot in the most aces scored list. While returning and defending against powerful strokes seemed to be her strength, she had the subtle ability to back it up with her serves.
The otherwise superb server, Ostapenko, too, was left behind in the battle of aces, with the Czech scoring 5 against the Latvian. Against Paolini, when things seemed to be getting close, the 28-year-old was able to nail her aces when required and ended up with 6 aces in the final.
Krejcikova’s precision in serving and her prowess in returning were instrumental in her journey to becoming a champion. Wimbledon, renowned for testing all-around athletes who can master every facet of their game, found in the Czech player a perfect embodiment of these qualities. In addition to her triumph at the 2021 French Open, she clinched the 2024 Wimbledon title, concluding the tournament with 26 aces.
4. Jelena Ostapenko: 28
The former French Open champion, Jelena Ostapenko, had a rather disappointing tournament in what was perhaps an excellent chance for her to win her first Wimbledon title. After having three relatively straightforward games in the first three rounds, where she didn’t drop a single set, she came up against the giant killer Putintseva, who knocked out World Number #1 Iga Swiatek in the third round.
However, the Latvian crushed the Russian in straight sets to meet Krejcikova in the quarterfinals. The otherwise ruthless and smashing 27-year-old struggled to come to terms with the Czech’s superb defensive abilities and lost her control, leading to unforced errors.
Ostapenko’s biggest strength, scoring aces at pivotal junctures, seemed to fade away when it mattered the most, and hence, despite scoring 19 aces in the first 2 games, she managed only 28 at the end of the 5 matches she played.
3. Lulu Sun: 31
The qualifier from New Zealand, Lulu Sun, was a breakout star who made heads turn during the 2024 Wimbledon Championship. The Kiwi was able to breeze through the qualifiers on the back of 8 aces, thereby showcasing her excellent serving ability. In her third-round match against China’s Zhu Lin, she rained down 10 aces and ended the tournament with 31, becoming one of the tournament’s highest ace scorers.
The 23-year-old began her post-qualifier campaign with a bang, stunning 2024 Australian Open runner-up Qinwen Zheng. However, the biggest moment of her career took place in the fourth round when she defeated crowd favorite and former US Open Champion Emma Raducanu, thereby announcing herself to the world. In an intense three-setter match, she lost to Donna Vekic in the quarters to end what was a promising tournament for the youngster.
2. Donna Vekic: 35
Donna Vekic from Croatia was truly a revelation in this tournament and was one of the most pleasing players to watch. She came into the Championships as the 37th seed and jumped 16 spots after finishing as a semi-finalist.
Her brutal serves and forehand winners played a huge role in elevating her performance, and had it not been for the arm injury she seemed to struggle with in the third set against Paolini, she might have gone on to play her first Grand Slam final. Against Lulu Sun in the quarterfinals, the 28-year-old smashed 8 aces to win the match from one set down.
Her rare ability to hit precisely on the line made it incredibly tough for her opponents. Despite battling several mental issues, the Croatian showed immense resolve and character to put on a remarkable show throughout the competition. The Croatian ended the tournament with 35 aces, the second-highest in the tournament.
1. Elena Rybakina: 39
One of the cleanest ball strikers in the game, Elena Rybakina, unsurprisingly tops the list for the highest number of aces scored in the 2024 Championship. The hard-hitting Kazakh was a force to be reckoned with, dominating the tournament in the initial stages and eliminating everyone who came her way with the help of her strong forehands and blazing first serves.
The 4th seed had an excellent first serve win percentage of 81%, which primarily included 39 aces, proving to be a crucial factor in her terrific 2024 Wimbledon stint. Coming into the business end of the tournament, the 25-year-old would have hoped to repeat her 2022 heroics, as she was the only player amongst all the other semi-finalists to rank in the Top 5.
She started well, claiming the first set, but the eventual champion, Krejcikova, showcased the power of self-belief and confidence to pull off a stunning comeback victory.
