Former American tennis player Serena Williams has lauded Andy Murray by stating that he was a leader in speaking for women in the sport.
Serena Williams and Andy Murray have always been good friends on and off the court. They even teamed up to play mixed doubles at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. However, their campaign was halted in the third round.
Following Murray’s retirement from the sport, Williams gave him a social media tribute and also congratulated him for his incredible career. Additionally, the 23-time singles Grand Slam champion also lauded Andy Murray for speaking for the rights of women.
Williams said (via X), “Congratulations to you Andy Murray for such an incredible career. I have to say I’ve always enjoyed watching you. One of the main reasons because you were one of the few players who would be more angry than me on the court, which is a hard thing to do.”
She further said, “You hold a special place in my heart. You always speak out so much for women and everything women deserve. You were the leader in that and the things you said about myself and Venus, so many things about how we were always so inspiring and what we meant to you, it really went such a long way in my heart,”
On Thursday, Andy Murray teamed up with his brother, Jamie Murray to face the Australian duo of John Peers and Rinky Hijikata in the first round of the men’s doubles event at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. However, the Murray brothers suffered a disappointing straight-set loss against the Australian duo.
After the match, a ceremony was organized for Murray, who’s currently playing his last Wimbledon campaign. The Scotsman withdrew from the singles event due to fitness concerns. Last week, he underwent a surgical procedure on his back for a spinal lump.
Nevertheless, the three-time Grand Slam decided to play men’s doubles and mixed doubles event at the grass court Major. Murray would also play at the 2024 Paris Olympics for team Great Britain. The tennis events at the 2024 Olympics will take place at Stade Roland Garros.
