Jessica Bouzas Maneiro recorded her first-ever Grand Slam victory over Marketa Vondrousova.
Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro recorded a resounding victory over defending champion Marketa Vondrousova in the first round of Wimbledon 2024 Championships on Tuesday.
Maneiro’s win over Vondrousova has confirmed that the women’s division will witness a new champion at Wimbledon 2024. The winner can be a former champion, as Elena Rybakina looked crisp in her opening round fixture.
However, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro took the limelight on the second day of the Grand Slam for all good reasons. The 21-year-old has recorded her first-ever Grand Slam main draw victory over World No. 6.
Maneiro was born on September 24, 2002, in VilagarcĂa de Arousa to father Juan JesĂşs and mother Gloria and she started playing tennis at the young age of five. At the age of 13, she started training at the Ferrer Tennis Academy and since 2022, she’s training under Javier MartĂ.
She reached her first ITF singles final at Torneo Internacional in Madrid in December 2020. However, she lost against Conny Perrin in the final of the tournament. Nevertheless, she won her maiden ITF singles title in Cairo, defeating Chantal Škamlová in the final.

Jessica Bouzas Maneiro also played at the 2024 Madrid Open, where she defeated countrywoman Paula Badosa in the first round. However, her biggest win has come at the 2024 Wimbledon over the Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova.
Jessica Bouzas Maneiro said after the match, “I feel so happy right now. I can’t believe it yet, so I have to take my time. I want to celebrate with my team, just to rest, do some physio and that’s it, (treat it) like a normal day…”
She further added, “I think my performance was good. I played so free. I don’t know, I played happy. That’s (the) way I’m playing. I think when I’m playing like that, my (best) tennis (comes) out.”
