Sumit Nagal is the last Indian to win a Wimbledon Junior title.
Indiaâs Sumit Nagal is set to make his main draw debut at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships on July 1.
However, the 26-year-old is a junior Wimbledon Boysâ Doubles champion too. In 2015, Nagal teamed up with Vietnamâs Ly Hoang Nam to win the prestigious Wimbledon Boysâ doubles titles.
Now ahead of the Indian tennis starâs singles main draw debut at Wimbledon 2024, letâs take a look at his memorable 2015 campaign.
First round: Alex de Minaur and Yosuke Watanuki
The Indo-Vietnam duo were seeded eighth in the tournament, and they started their campaign against Australiaâs Alex de Minaur and Japanâs Yosuke Watanuki. Nagal and Nam started that match strong and didnât face any problems in securing the victory, 6-4, 7-5. Interestingly, the Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur is currently World No. #9.
Second Round: Jonathan Gray and Ewan Moore
In the second round, Nagal and Ly Hoang Nam locked horns against the British pair of Jonathan Gray and Ewan Moore. Gray and Moore defeated the duo of Kenneth Raisma and Denis Shapovalov in the first round. They also managed to win the first set against Nagal and Nam but eventually failed to hold the lead and ended up losing the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Quarterfinals: Yusuke Takahashi and Jumpei Yamasaki
After two strong victories in the initial rounds, Nagal and Ly Hoang Nam gained confidence, which helped them win over Yusuke Takahashi and Jumpei Yamasaki in straight sets. A 6-2, 6-3 victory helped the Indian-Vietnamese pair secure a berth in the semi-finals.
Semifinals: Miomir Kecmanovic and Casper Ruud
Miomir Kecmanovic and Casper Ruud secured a spot in the Wimbledon Boysâ doubles semifinals with a resounding win over Americaâs William Blumberg and Tommy Paul. However, they faced resilient competition from the Indian-Vietnamese pair in the last four. The first set was forced into a tiebreak by Nagal and Nam, which they eventually won 7-5.
However, Ruud and Kecmanovic made a comeback in the second set to make the score equal. Nevertheless, top-notch tennis action was witnessed in the decider as Sumit Nagal and Ly Hoang Nam sealed the victory 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 12-10.
Final: Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan
Second seed Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan faced Sumit Nagal and Ly Hoang Nam in the final of the 2015 Wimbledon Boysâ doubles final. The first set between the two pairs was a contest of nip and tuck, which was forced into a tiebreak. However, Nagal and Nam resisted the pressure and won the first set 7-6 (7-4). Displaying an elite mentality, they won the prestigious title in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
