“The Nigerian Nightmare” looks to be planning his return!
Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has once again sparked major discussion among MMA fans after hinting that he could soon make his UFC return.
For months, speculation has surrounded Islam Makhachev and his long-awaited first welterweight title outing. At one stage, fans believed the UFC was finally moving toward a blockbuster super fight between Makhachev and Ilia Topuria at the rumored UFC White House event.
However, reports later suggested negotiations collapsed because of financial disagreements, forcing the promotion to revisit its options for the welterweight title picture.
More recently, it appeared that Ian Machado Garry was next in line for the fight after revealing that he had already begun training camp. Many fans viewed Garry as the clear No. 1 contender, especially after his recent run inside the Octagon. But Usman may have complicated those plans.
Kamaru Usman fuels title fight speculation
The former welterweight king recently hinted that he could be heading straight into a title fight next, reviving earlier talks of a showdown with Makhachev. Previously, the former lightweight champion himself admitted that he was interested in facing Usman during his first defense at 170 pounds.
At the time, the matchup did not appear to interest the UFC. Now, with Makhachev’s next fight still unconfirmed, Usman’s comments have reopened the debate surrounding the division’s immediate future.
Kamaru Usman snapped a three-fight losing skid with a victory over Joaquin Buckley last June, but critics quickly pointed out that Buckley’s recent setbacks have hurt the value of that win.
Usman had also teased a potential return to middleweight in recent months, leading some fans to wonder whether he could instead face Sean Strickland.
Despite the growing chatter, the UFC is still expected to prioritize Machado Garry and possibly Carlos Prates ahead of Usman in the current welterweight title race.
