UFC 307 is going to be exciting as ‘Poatan’ will be making his third title defense

Two years ago, Leon Edwards grabbed an upset victory for the UFC welterweight title from the jaws of defeat with a last-minute knockout win against Kamaru Usman, capping off UFC 278 in an exciting manner. A year later, Justin Gaethje landed an identical hit on Dustin Poirier to end UFC 291.

This week, the action returns to the Delta Center for UFC 307, which includes many top contender matchups, the swan song of a two-time UFC champion, and a pair of intriguing championship fights to cap off the evening.

Light Heavyweight World Championship bout: Alex Pereira (c) vs Khalil Rountree Jr.

For the third time this year, light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira defends his title in the main event of a UFC pay-per-view, facing rising challenger Khalil Rountree Jr. to finish off UFC 307 in Salt Lake City.

In the roughly 11 months since Pereira won the vacant title with a second-round knockout win over former champ Jiri Prochazka last year at Madison Square Garden, the 37-year-old Brazilian has successfully defended the title against ex-titleholder Jamahal Hill at UFC 300 and a second stoppage over Prochazka at UFC 303, extending his overall winning streak to four. “Poatan” is still one of the most feared finishers in the UFC, a deadly striker with amazing speed and skill for someone his stature.

Rountree Jr. touches down in Salt Lake City on a five-fight winning streak, having earned finishes in four of those contests, each more devastating and resounding than the last. In his last appearance, the 34-year-old challenger stopped Anthony Smith in the third round of a fight he was winning handily, rocking him with a sharp, forceful left hand before “Lionheart” slowly collapsed to the canvas with Rountree Jr. standing over him, the follow-up blow locked and loaded, but never fired.

Women’s Bantamweight World Championship bout: Raquel Pennington (c) vs Julianna Pena

In the co-main event, Raquel Pennington defends her bantamweight championship against Julianna Peña, who previously held it.

Pennington won the championship in January of this year, overcoming Mayra Bueno Silva’s early aggressiveness before gradually separating herself from the Brazilian as the bout went on, ultimately winning by unanimous decision. The victory extended the 36-year-old’s winning run to six and 11-3 in her previous 14 fights, with each of those defeats coming against a former UFC champion.

Pena has been waiting for the chance to contend for the championship she previously had since last summer when she was forced out of her trilogy match with Amanda Nunes at UFC 289 in Vancouver. A slow-healing injury held her out of the fight in January, allowing Pennington and Bueno Silva to square off, but “The Venezuelan Vixen” is again well and ready to return to the battle in a bid to become a two-time UFC champion.

Bantamweight bout: Jose Aldo vs Mario Bautista

Brazilian veteran Jose Aldo seeks his second win of 2024, while Mario Bautista seeks to prolong his winning run by defeating his most challenging opponent to date in this intriguing bantamweight matchup.

Aldo concluded his temporary hiatus in May with a brilliant decision victory over Jonathan Martinez in Rio de Janeiro. It was a typical Aldo effort, as the former featherweight champion appeared swift and focused, putting Martinez on the back foot right on and never letting him get any momentum.

It’s rare to “quietly” win six consecutive fights in the UFC, but that’s where Bautista stands as he prepares to face Aldo this weekend. The MMA Lab product advanced in the division with a unanimous decision victory over Ricky Simon at the start of the year, and a win against the “King of Rio” on Saturday will move him even further up the divisional ladder.

Women’s Bantamweight bout: Ketlen Vieira vs Kayla Harrison

Before the bantamweight championship is contested in the co-main event, Ketlen Vieira and Kayla Harrison will square off in a fight that many believe will determine the next title challenger in the 135-pound division.

Vieira has been a championship contender for the past six years, however, she has previously struggled in this role. After defeating Miesha Tate and Holly Holm, the Brazilian lost a split decision to Pennington, knocking her back a step. She bounced back last summer, defeating Pannie Kianzad by unanimous decision.

Harrison made her debut in the renowned Octagon in April, quickly establishing herself as a powerhouse in the division with a one-sided second-round submission victory against former champion Holly Holm. The two-time Olympic gold winner and two-time PFL tournament champion is 17-1 overall, with all but four of her wins coming within the distance.

Middleweight bout: Roman Dolidze vs Kevin Holland

The main event begins in the middleweight class, with Roman Dolidze taking on Kevin Holland. Dolidze will make his third appearance of the year, following a short-notice unanimous decision win over Anthony Smith up a division at UFC 303. The Georgian has a 7-3 record in his first ten UFC fights, alternating between middleweight and light heavyweight categories, and hopes to secure his spot in the Top 10 with a victorious return to the middleweight ranks.

Holland returned to the 185-pound weight class last time out after a two-fight slide at welterweight, defeating Michal Oleksiejczuk by first-round choke. Since his breakout 2020 campaign, when he won five fights in eight months, the chatty “Trailblazer” is 5-6 with one no-contest, with only one win in his previous four middleweight appearances.
