Jon Jones will be making his first UFC heavyweight title defense
It’s hard to imagine, but Saturday’s UFC return to Madison Square Garden will be the ninth time the Octagon has been set up in “The World’s Most Famous Arena.”
From the spectacular debut in 2016, highlighted by Conor McGregor’s lightweight championship triumph, to Alex Pereira making MSG his own stomping grounds each of the previous three years, these yearly journeys to New York City have always been electrifying, and this year should be no exception.
Saturday’s pay-per-view promises to be enthralling from the start, with a historic heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic and a superb undercard from top to bottom.

Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic, heavyweight title
The current heavyweight champion squares up against the most decorated heavyweight titleholder in UFC history to finish off this weekend’s fight program, as Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic finally share the Octagon.
Jones, perhaps the best fighter in the sport’s history, earned the heavyweight championship with a quick and very easy first-round submission win against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285, joining the elite group of athletes who have won UFC gold in both weight divisions.
He was supposed to defend against Miocic last November, but he sustained a torn pectoral muscle in the buildup to the fight, leading to this one-year postponement, which means he has only fought once in the previous four years and nine months.
Miocic is the only heavyweight champion to successfully defend his championship three times. He hopes to make history by beating Jon Jones. The Ohio native has faced two opponents — Francis Ngannou and Daniel Cormier — a combined five times in his previous five fights, and he returns to action here for the first time since losing the belt at UFC 260 in March 2021.
Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler, lightweights
Three years after squaring off for the vacant UFC lightweight championship, Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler rematch to determine who will remain in the middle of the chase in the talented 155-pound division.
Oliveira competes for the first time since his split decision defeat to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300 in April, hoping to break out of his “win one, lose one” trend from the previous two fights.
“Do Bronx” is just 1-2 over the previous two years dating back to his title loss against Islam Makhachev, which makes you question if the 35-year-old is now slowing down after beginning young and competing as frequently as he did during his march to the top of the division
Despite this being Chandler’s sixth UFC appearance, he will make his third trip to MSG, where he is 0-2 in intriguing battles against Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier at UFC 268 and UFC 281. He hasn’t competed since his defeat to Poirier two years ago, waiting for a fight with Conor McGregor to come together, but a win today will put him back in the championship contention.
Bo Nickal vs Paul Craig, middleweights
Bo Nickal makes his second appearance of the year, taking a huge step up in competition as he faces Paul Craig in this exciting middleweight bout.
Nickal, the 2019 Dan Hodge Trophy winner and previous Big 10 Athlete of the Year, is a perfect 3-0 inside the Octagon and 6-0 overall in his brief MMA career.
He has defeated Jamie Pickett, Val Woodburn, and Cody Brundage in his first three UFC fights, and now has the opportunity to demonstrate that he is on the verge of reaching the Top 15 if he can sustain his form and win the biggest fight of his career this weekend.
Craig enters Saturday’s fight after losing two straight fights against Brendan Allen and Caio Borralho, both of whom are ranked in the top ten of the middleweight division.
The Scottish veteran has a big experience edge over Nickal and does his finest work on the ground, making him an ideal dancing partner for the former Penn State wrestler.
Viviane Araujo vs Karine Silva, women’s flyweights
Viviane Araujo will meet Karine Silva in an all-Brazilian flyweight bout in the midst of Saturday’s pay-per-view main event.
Araujo is a seasoned veteran in the 125-pound weight class, having been listed in the best 15 since her second fight with the promotion and sharing the Octagon with many of the division’s best stars.
Though she’s just 2-4 in her previous six fights, the Cerrado MMA representative is a perennial difficult out and a hard challenge for anybody looking to advance in the flyweight rankings.
Silva has quietly been one of the most successful members of the Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) Class of ’21, going 4-0 with three finishes to start her UFC career and rising to No. 11 in the divisional rankings.
The 30-year-old Gile Ribeiro Team fighter defeated Ariane da Silva by unanimous decision last time out, extending her winning run to nine and demonstrating her ability to battle for 15 minutes inside the cage.
