Du Plessis & Strickland will meet each other for the second time

Whenever UFC arrives in Australia, something special happens. From the introduction of the flyweight division and the first event to feature finishes in every bout to Holly Holm shocking Ronda Rousey and Sean Strickland shocking Israel Adesanya, whether the Octagon is erected in Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, or Sydney, each card seems to produce something that surprises or energizes fans, and this weekend’s return to Qudos Bank Arena should be no exception.

Saturday’s fight lineup, headlined by a middleweight championship rematch with the strawweight title on the line in the co-main event, has an impressive mix of emerging stars and Oceanic competitors, with some checking off both boxes. So, let’s get started on this weekend’s pay-per-view by looking at the matches that will take place in the cage.

Dricus Du Plessis (22-2-0) (c) vs Sean Strickland (29-6-0) – Middleweight Championship

One year and twenty days after their first encounter at UFC 297 in Toronto, Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland face off again, this time for the middleweight title.

Du Plessis enters his second straight appearance in Australia, hoping to keep his unblemished record inside the Octagon and extend his total winning run to 11 as he defends his championship for the second time. After capturing the championship in January, “Stillknocks” faced Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 in Perth last August, submitting “The Last Stylebender” to solidify his position atop the division and put their rivalry to rest.

Strickland won the championship against Adesanya in the same building before losing it at the start of last year. He returned with a strong performance against Paulo Costa at UFC 302, which was inexplicably scored as a split decision, and will attempt to join Adesanya as only the second man to win the middleweight belt twice by exacting retribution on Du Plessis this weekend.

Zhang Weili (25-3-0) (c) vs Tatiana Suarez (11-0-0) – Strawweight Championship

Before Du Plessis and Strickland rematch, strawweight champion Zhang Weili defends her title against unbeaten challenger Tatiana Suarez in an intriguing co-main event clash.

Zhang had just one appearance in 2024, but it was noteworthy, as the two-time titleholder rallied to defeat her compatriot Yan Xiaonan in a dramatic back-and-forth fight at UFC 300. The Chinese star has already won four consecutive fights and successfully defended her championship since recovering it at the end of 2023, and she will attempt to maintain her lead in the category by delivering Suarez her first professional loss this weekend in Sydney.

Long seen as a potential champion, the 34-year-old Suarez now has the opportunity to compete for UFC gold. The former Olympic wrestling prospect and Ultimate Fighter champion has six victories and four finishes since her stint on the long-running reality TV program, and she hopes to become the sixth woman to hold the 115-pound weight class title by preserving her immaculate record and defeating Zhang.

Justin Tafa (7-4-0) vs Tallison Teixeira (7-0-0)

At UFC 312 this weekend, heavyweight finishers Justin Tafa and Tallison Teixeira will face off in the evening’s last non-title event.

Tafa, 31, is hoping to get things back on track after losing a unanimous decision to Karl Williams in his only match of 2024. With a 4-4 record and one no contest in his first nine Octagon appearances, the heavy-handed “Bad Man” has won all of his fights by stoppage and will be looking for his second straight knockout win in Sydney after putting Austen Lane to sleep at UFC 293 the last time the promotion came to town.

Teixeira, a member of Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) Class of ’24, will make his promotional debut this weekend in Australia. The tall Brazilian improved his record to 7-0 with a first-round stoppage win to earn his contract, and he will attempt to keep his perfect finishing record as he enters the Octagon for the first time here.

Jim Crute (12-4-1) vs Rodolfo Bellato (12-2-0)

Jimmy Crute, an Australian light heavyweight, returns to the Octagon on Saturday in Sydney against Brazilian Rodolfo Bellato.

Crute jumped into the Top 15 in the 205-pound weight class after receiving his contract on the second season of Dana White’s Contender Series, winning four of his first five fights. However, after four consecutive fights without a win, including three stoppage defeats, the still 28-year-old prodigy decided to call it quits in the summer of 2023.

Bellato took two chances to enter the UFC roster through Dana White’s Contender Series, losing to Vitor Petrino in his first fight before punching his ticket the following season with a win over Murtaza Talha. He made his promotional debut in Austin, Texas, in late 2023, overcoming some adversity to defeat Ihor Potieria, and will now try to improve on that performance when he returns to the ring for the second time.

Jake Matthews (20-7-0) vs Francisco Prado (12-2-0)

In the opening battle of the UFC 312 pay-per-view main program, Jake Matthews faces Argentina’s Francisco Prado for the first time in the welterweight class.

The 30-year-old Matthews, the second longest-serving Australian on the roster after Robert Whittaker, will make his 21st outing inside the Octagon this weekend. He’s had mixed success in his past seven fights, but he’ll seek to break that pattern by building on his UFC 302 victory over Phil Rowe and collecting his third win in as many starts when he competes in Sydney.

Prado goes up to the 170-pound category after a 1-2 record in the lightweight class, including a first-round knockout win over Ottman Azaitar, a decision defeat to Jamie Mullarkey in his short-notice debut, and a Fight of the Night victory over Daniel Zellhuber in February. Still just 22 years old, it will be intriguing to watch how the Miami-based kid adjusts to his new division and conducts himself in a matchup against an experienced player like Matthews.

Quillan Salkilld vs Anshul Jubli

Quillan Salkilld and Anshul Jubli, both 7-1 lightweights, clash early on the fight schedule in Sydney. Salkilld, 25, punched his entrance to the UFC with a unanimous decision victory over Gauge Young last season on Dana White’s Contender Series, extending his winning record to seven fights. After defeating Jeka Saragih in the first Road to UFC lightweight tournament, Jubli lost to Mike Breeden via stoppage at UFC 294.
