UFC Fight Night 247 is going to have some interesting matches
Before the UFC heads to New York City for its annual November pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden, the mixed martial arts leader returns to Las Vegas for one more 2024 Fight Night card at the UFC APEX, which happens to be the 100th such event to take place there.
Since the pandemic forced a shift in strategy, these shows have consistently provided emerging talents with a large platform and a greater share of the spotlight, and this weekend’s centennial is no exception, as one of the top freshmen from the Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) Class of ’23 makes his main event debut, while the rest of the card is littered with promising names and entertaining punch-ups.

Neil Magny vs Carlos Prates (Welterweight)
Neil Magny battles sprinting newcomer Carlos Prates in a thrilling welterweight main event on Saturday. Magny is as consistent as they come when it comes to walking into the Octagon and going about his professional business, with this weekend’s main event being his 34th UFC appearance.
He’s been in his present position as the ranking experienced measuring stick for rising talents for some years and has repeatedly turned down those who aren’t ready to move ahead, with his only recent losses coming against a trio of undefeated standouts and former title challenger Gilbert Burns.
Prates wowed Dana White when he defeated Mitch Ramirez at the APEX in September to earn his chance to battle on the big stage, and he has continued to wow the UFC CEO and audiences ever since.
Following decisive victories over Trevin Giles and Charles Radtke earlier this year, the 31-year-old Brazilian traveled to Perth, Australia, and defeated Li Jingliang for his third consecutive UFC victory and tenth overall.
Cody Garbrandt vs Miles Johns (Bantamweight)
Former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt faces Miles Johns in the co-main event, with both looking to solidify their positions in the divisional pecking order.
It’s been almost eight years since Garbrandt’s virtuoso performance to win the championship from Dominick Cruz at UFC 207, and “No Love” has had mixed fortunes since then, going 3-6 in his previous nine fights. He won back-to-back fights in 2023 before losing by submission to Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 300, so he comes into this one hoping to get things back on track.
Because of the division’s depth, Johns’ success has gone unnoticed, as the Kansas resident arrives in Las Vegas has won two straight, is unbeaten in his previous four, and has a 6-2 record with one no-contest in his UFC career. “Chapo” is a powerful wrestler who enjoys slinging hammers, and despite a few minor setbacks, he seems to be poised to make a run into the bantamweight top 15.
Denise Gomes vs Karolina Kowalkiewicz (Strawweight)
Karolina Kowalkiewicz, the second oldest strawweight fighter, will face Denise Gomes, the second youngest 115-pound fighter, in the Octagon on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Between June 2022 and May 2024, the 39-year-old Polish veteran Kowalkiewicz had a good two-year rebirth, winning four straight fights until falling short against Iasmin Lucindo, the division’s youngest competitor, at UFC 301 in Rio de Janeiro.
Despite the loss, Kowalkiewicz has demonstrated that she is still a formidable opponent for anybody in the division, and she provides a good veteran test for anyone with whom she shares the Octagon at this stage of her career.
Gomes, 24, has had mixed results in her first five UFC appearances, losing her debut to Loma Lookboonmee before finishing Bruna Brasil and Yazmin Jauregui, losing to Angela Hill, the strawweight division’s elder stateswoman, and rebounding with a split decision victory over Eduardo Moura.
The Las Vegas-based Parana Vale Tudo representative has significant strength and takes an aggressive stance, and many are keeping a close eye on her as she teams up with a divisional mainstay for the second time.
Bernardo Sopaj vs Ricky Turcios (Bantamweight)
Bantamweights eager to end the year on a high note square off in this fight, as recent TUF winner Ricky Turcios faces UFC sophomore Benardo Sopaj.
Turcios has alternated wins and losses since winning the TUF 29 bantamweight tournament with a split decision over Brady Hiestand, losing to Aiemann Zahabi and Raul Rosas Jr. and winning over Kevin Natividad in between. Turcios shown greater aggression and scrambling ability on the program and in his battle with Hiestand, so it will be interesting to see whether he returns to same tactics tonight.
Sopaj, 24, made his debut in March, coming in on short notice against Vinicius Oliveira and putting up a good fight before being stopped with a horrific flying knee in the last minutes. The “Lion King” had won 11 of his previous 13 fights and will seek to regain that form when he makes his first full-camp debut in the UFC on Saturday.
Reinier de Ridder vs Gerald Meerschaert (Middlewweight)
On Saturday’s main program, Gerald Meerschaert will face Reinier de Ridder in a highly anticipated middleweight showdown.
“GM3” is a “kill or be killed” fight in the 185-pound weight class, with the most finishes (12) and submission wins (11) in the division’s history, as well as 35 of 37 career wins and 12 of 17 career defeats occurring inside the distance. He may be difficult to beat at times and has a habit of fighting back when opponents tire, like he did in August when he recovered to defeat Edmen Shahbazyan.
“The Dutch Knight” joins the UFC after a lengthy run under the ONE Championship banner, where he won gold at middleweight and light heavyweight while going 16-0 overall before losing both titles in consecutive battles. He bounced back with a first-round stoppage victory in July, and he hopes to demonstrate his potential as a force in his new surroundings by defeating Meerschaert this weekend.
Luana Pinheiro vs Gillian Robertson (Strawweight)
The strawweight class kicks off the main show, with rated stars Luana Pinheiro and Gillian Robertson facing off. Pinheiro, who began her UFC career with three consecutive victories, returns to Las Vegas aiming to snap a two-fight losing streak after being defeated by Amanda Ribas and Angela Hill.
The 30-year-old Brazilian is an aggressive, albeit raw, attacker with good judo and decent ground control, but she will need to be sharp with her foundations and defensive mechanics to win this one.
Robertson is coming off her greatest win in her career, a unanimous decision victory over Michelle Waterson-Gomez at UFC 303 in June, which gave her four straight victories and four wins in her last five. The Florida-based Canadian is terrific from top position and so secure in her grappling that she doesn’t mind getting taken down. She already has the most submission wins of any female fighter in UFC history, seven.
