The year has lots of international events to look forward to in the sport.

Indian weightlifters will be busy in 2022 as there are plenty of competitions in line for them. Despite the looming threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, all categories of sports have picked up pace. The events are being organized under strict protocols and restrictions. As a result, there is more sporting action to see than before.

Indian weightlifters will be participating in many international level events in the forthcoming months. They will hope to perform at a high level and achieve big things for themselves and the country. Saikhom Mirabai Chanu created history by securing silver at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Her achievement will act as motivation for the weightlifters in the following year.

Here is what is in store for the Indian weightlifting athletes in the year 2022:

March

2022 IWF Junior World Championships (20 March to 27 March) - One of the most high-profile events for Indian Weightlifting in the upcoming months is the Junior World Championships. The 2021 edition was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where India won two silvers and one bronze through Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli. Greece will be the host nation for the 2022 edition.

May

2022 IWF Youth World Championships (1 May to 31 May) - Mexico will be the host nation for the 2022 edition of the IWF Youth World Championships. Several promising young weightlifters will aim to take part and win medals for the country. The Youth World Championships will be a testing ground for future stars like Katulu Ravi Kumar and Ragala Venkat Rahul.

2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham (30 July to 3 August) - One of the major events of the year for Indian weightlifting is the Commonwealth Games. The multi-sport event will take place in the city of Birmingham, England. Indian weightlifters won five golds, two silvers and two bronze medals at the 2018 edition of the CWG Games.

Indian weightlifters will hope to deliver stronger performances and all the high-profile athletes will be part of the multi-sport event. This will be the first major international event for Mirabai Chanu since Tokyo, should she qualify.

September

2022 Asian Games (10 September to 25 September) - Hangzhou in China will host the prestigious 19th Asian Games in September 2022. Indian weightlifters did not win any medals in the 2018 edition as the competition is extremely tough. The athletes will hope to break the drought and collect more medals to add to India’s overall tally from the multi-sport event.

October

2022 IWF Senior World Championships (1 October to 30 October) - Post the Junior and Youth World Championships, the senior edition will take place later in October 2022. The Chinese city of Chongqing will be the host of the tournament, which is of immense importance to Indian weightlifting.

Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam won the gold last time, which was the only medal for India. Youngsters like Jeremy Lalrinnuga will be looking to make their mark at the event, while Mirabai Chanu will look to further her status as India's best weightlifter.
