IWLF National Weightlifting Championships: Lalruatfela, G. Ravisankar set national records in junior men's event
Lalruatfela, G. Ravisankar competed in 89kg category at IWLF National Weightlifting Championships.
The IWLF National Weightlifting Championships 2024-2025 saw multiple national records being set in the junior men’s event. Two national records were set by Lalruatfela and G. Ravisankar in the 89kg category for junior men. Lalruatfela of Mizoram successfully lifted 174kgs in clean and jerk, while G. Ravisankar lifted a total of 311kgs in junior men’s 89kg.
Ravisankar of Andhra Pradesh finished first in the junior men’s 89kg with a total lift of 311kgs. Coming in second was Lalruatfela with 306kgs, as Raahi Verma of Haryana finished a distant third with an overall lift of 287kgs.
The 18-year-old from Mizoram bettered Manish’s record by 3kgs in clean and jerk. On the other hand, Ravisankar broke the record of Ramkaran Prajapati by a massive 7kgs. The 20-year-old from Andhra Pradesh had unsuccessful attempts at 141kgs in snatch and 178kgs in clean and jerk.
He started with a successful attempt of 173kgs in clean and jerk but could not go further. Lalruatfela started clean and jerk by clearing 162kgs and then jumped to 169kgs. In his third attempt, he went on to break the national record.
Both record-breakers were the only ones to lift more than a total of 300kgs. A total of 14 weightlifters competed in the event and 13 of them completed the competition. Aryan Thakran of New Delhi was the youngest to feature at the event, as the 17-year-old finished 10th with a total of 260kgs. He was also the lightest lifter in the fray with a body weight of 81kgs.
20-year-old Jobanpreet of Chandigarh was the oldest one in the competition, as he ended up sixth with a total of 269kgs.
Ajay Sing, Rohan Kumar Mahto clinch top positions at IWLF National Weightlifting Championships
In the senior men’s 89kg event, Ajay Singh claimed the top honours with a total of 320kgs. Singh dominated the field with 143kgs in snatch and 177kgs in clean and jerk. The 27-year-old was the senior-most athlete amongst his rivals and had a 5kg lead over second-placed Suditya Baruah.
Rohan Kumar Mahto came in first in the youth men’s 89kg event with a total of 256kgs. He made a memorable comeback after placing fifth in snatch with a best attempt of 109kgs. But, in the clean and jerk, he came out firing with a best of 147kgs.
