Sanju Devi to play for gold at Junior World Wrestling Championships

Indian wrestlers collected more medals in the global event on a successful day.

The 2021 Junior World Wrestling Championships are in full swing. Several Indian wrestlers were in action on Thursday trying to add more medals to the tally. Following the conclusion of men’s freestyle matches, it was time for the women to shine.

Indian wrestlers added four medals on Day 2 of the Junior World Wrestling Championships in Ufa, Russia. In the action lined up for Thursday, India’s Simran (50kg), Sito (55kg) and others were in line to play their bronze medal matches.

Indian female wrestlers collected three medals today and more could be on the way tomorrow. Sanju Devi and Bhateri have made their way into the finals of their respective categories. Here is a brief summary of the day’s events that saw Indian wrestlers produce their best.

Mansi - 57 kg

Mansi started the day strongly with an easy win over her opponent from the USA by a score of 16-4 in the 57 kg category. However, the youngster lost her quarterfinal clash by a 9-1 score against Turkey’s Elvira Kamaloglu.

Pinki - 53 kg

Pinki lost her bout to Emine Cakmak of Turkey by a score of 12-7 in the 53 kg category. As it happened, the Indian grappler tried her best, but could not overcome the challenge posed by her opponent.

Sanju Devi

Sanju Devi won her opening bout against Luisa Scheel of Germany by a score of 5-2. The contest was very close but the Indian took advantage when the opportunity presented itself. She marched into the quarterfinals with this win.

She continued her impressive performance with a victory in the next round. Sanju Devi defeated Iva Geric of Croatia by 4-3 and moved into the semifinals. She made her way into the final with a victory in the next round against Birgul Soltanova of Azerbaijan with an 8-5 score. She will have a shot at the gold medal tomorrow.

Bhateri - 65 kg

Bhateri moved to the semifinals after defeating Tunisia’s Jlassi K. She followed that with another victory against Amina Capezan of Romania. The score was tied at 2-2 but the Indian won through more points in a single move.

Saneh 

Saneh started her day strongly by defeating Kseniya Patapovich of Belarus by 6-2 to march into the quarterfinals. She moved to the next round by defeating Tsogzolmaa Dorjsuren of Mongolia by a 7-0 in a convincing win. Unfortunately, Saneh lost the semi-final to USA’s Kennedy Alexis by 0-11 points on technical superiority. She will play for the bronze medal tomorrow.  

Simran - 50 kg

Simran won a bronze medal in the 50 kg category by defeating Natalia Varakina of Belarus. She defeated her opponent by a 7-3 score and added another medal to India’s tally.

Sito - 55 kg

Sito was the other wrestler who bagged a medal today. She secured bronze by defeating Turkey’s Melda Dernecki by 11-0 on technical superiority. 

Bipasha - 76 kg

Bipasha made her way into the finals of the 76 kg category yesterday. She played her final bout today and unfortunately settled for a silver medal. She lost the gold medal match against Welker of the USA.
