Delhi Police look for Sushil Kumar for alleged role in the death of a wrestler

The death of the athlete reportedly took place outside the Chhatrasal Stadium.

Indian wrestler and two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar has landed in a fresh controversy. Delhi Police is on the lookout for the wrestler. Raids to locate the 37-year-old have taken place. The authorities want to investigate his involvement in the death of a wrestler outside the Chattarsal Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday. 

A 24-year-old former junior national champion Sagar Kumar has died following a conflict. As reported by Indian Express, Delhi Police have initiated a probe to ascertain Sushil Kumar’s involvement in the whole incident. The authorities are on the lookout for the Olympic bronze and silver medallist, who want to bring him in for questioning.  

Comments from the Delhi Police

“We are probing the role of Sushil Kumar as allegations have been made against him. A team was sent to his house but he was found to be missing. We are looking for him. Several teams have been formed to trace the accused persons,” Additional DCP (north-west) Dr Guriqbal Singh Sidhu said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police further stated, “The deceased was identified as Sagar Kumar, son of a Delhi Police Head Constable and one of the injured has been identified as Sonu Mahal. We have registered an FIR and investigations are on.”

Sushil Kumar had earlier presented his side of the story and denied any involvement. “They weren't our wrestlers, it happened late last night. We have informed police officials that some unknown people jumped into our premises and fought. No connection of our stadium with this incident”, he told ANI.

According to the initial stages of the investigation, the DCP has confirmed that a quarrel took place between Sushil Kumar, Ajay, Prince, Sonu, Sagar, Amit and others in the parking area of the stadium.

Further Developments

Sagar and his friends were staying in a house in the Model Town area, as reported by the Police. They were instructed to vacate the premises which eventually was the probable cause of the conflict. Sushil owned the property apparently.

The police control room received a call around 2 am from Chhatrasal stadium about a “firing incident”. However, there was nobody at the spot of the incident apart from five empty cars, as stated by the FIR.

Sushil Kumar has certainly found himself in the middle of a murky situation, and the two-time Olympic medallist could be in further trouble as the investigation proceeds. He has hardly competed lately, with participation in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Games unlikely too.
