Former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre explains his hesitations to turn heel
“I am not willing to turn heel unless it makes perfect sense, I wish to be cheered and emotionally invested in fans”- Drew McIntyre.
Drew McIntyre entered WWE as a heel and had a pretty average first run. Although he was considered as McMahon’s chosen one and had a Intercontinental Championship reign, his limited in-ring moves spoiled his push and released from the contract in 2014.
However, he sorted out his inabilities and fixed during his day off from the company and wrestled for other wrestling promotions. His transformation and improved in-ring skills gained the attention of the WWE officials, which made him sign another contract with the WWE.
Although he returned as a face in NXT, while making his main roster debut he established himself as a heel wrestler. He was portrayed as one of the most dominant heel wrestlers, that made him a top card wrestler by aligning with fellow heel wrestlers and feuding with top baby faces.
His heel turn faded when he broke his alliance with Shane McMahon and started competing individually. The Scottish Psychopath became the Scottish Warrior and this face turn gave him a monumental success to his career. He won the Royal Rumble 2020, headlined WrestleMania, won his first World Championship by defeating Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 36, and became the face of WWE during the Thunderdome period.
Since he lost his WWE Championship and moved to SmackDown in 2021, he didn’t receive the push and was pulled away from the championship shadow. While he was away from WWE television after WrestleMania 39 rumors went viral that his absence is an indication of his character change and he would return as a heel.
As many were excited to see Drew as a heel, he returned as a face at Money in the Bank, proving rumors false. In a most recent interview, McIntyre explained why he is not willing to turn heel.
What does Drew McIntyre say about turning Heel?
Drew McIntyre in his recent interview with Armon Sandler’s ‘Stay Busy’ Podcast was asked about his possibility of turning heel in WWE.
Drew said that he wishes to stay on the path that he is currently in and is looking forward to a compelling storyline. He loves receiving cheers from the crowd and getting emotionally invested in them. He wasn’t doing that once, but the triple threat match at WrestleMania 39 with Sheamus got him back.
He wishes to add layers to the character and continue to do things outside the ring and “having a title reigns in front of fans” and is willing to go any direction that is interesting.
Drew said, “People are calling for a heel turn, but I’m not willing to do that unless it makes perfect sense”.
He continued that the company itself has “a lot of equity” invested in him. As he is meeting a lot of people outside the ring, meeting athletes of the Special Olympics he now understands John Cena’s perspective of not turning heel. He also stated that one of his favorite runs was “outside the company as a heel. When that dark side comes out, it’s pretty dark”.
