WWE expecting “Cody Rhodes to turn into next Daniel Bryan”

Last week on SmackDown, Cody Rhodes confronted Roman Reigns and said that he wants the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship and coming for him, but not at WrestleMania 40. Fans got confused and Cody introduced The Rock, which was teased to be the potential main event for WrestleMania 40. This made the fans disappointed as they wanted Cody to finish their story by dethroning Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.
Fans showed their disappointment by making the Digital Exclusive segment of The Rock & Roman Reigns face-off the most disliked video of WWE with more than 300K dislikes. The fans & other stars stood for Cody and made #WeWantCody trend on X/Twitter for three days in a row. As the unlikely move of Rock taking Cody’s spot disappointed most of the fans and WWE stars, a backstage report reveals the details behind the bookings.
Cody Rhodes to turn Daniel Bryan
On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that as of what happened Friday night, the current plans are set for Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes. He reported that some within WWE knew the change of plans, but they didn’t tell many. Meltzer reported that WWE is expecting Cody Rhodes to turn into a big babyface like Daniel Bryan with a similar story which Bryan had in 2014, where fans rallied and extended their support to him. However Meltzer is not sure about Rock getting booed by the fans.
Dave Meltzer on WOR said,
“The plan as of Friday night was Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes. And we’ll see how it plays out because now they’re trying to turn it into a story and see how the story goes…..I can’t tell you that they didn’t tell anybody [about plans changing]. But certainly, they didn’t tell many people or almost anyone.“
“I don’t know what they were expecting [fans booing The Rock]. But they were expecting Cody Rhodes to turn into Daniel Bryan…..They were expecting to make Cody Rhodes into a martyr and make him a bigger babyface out of that. Were they expecting people to boo Dwayne? I don’t know. I’ve asked that one, and I haven’t gotten a straight answer.”
