Sting is one of the most successful and dominating professional wrestlers of all time, who had a great legacy in the industry. Sting has been in the wrestling industry for a long time for almost four decades. Sting wrestled across some of the biggest pro-wrestling promotions including WCW, TNA, WWE and AEW and was one of the top stars.
The Icon recently had his last match at AEW and retired from professional wrestling. The Icon remained undefeated throughout his reign in AEW and retired as the World Tag Team Champion with Darby Allin.
Although Sting had a long and great career, his WWE career was too brief. He retired from in-ring action during his run in WWE, but came out of retirement after moving to AEW. As most could wonder, why Sting left WWE, The Immortal himself has spoken about his departure from the company.
The Sting on leaving WWE for AEW
Sting in an interview with Bleacher’s Report two years ago revealed the reason why he left WWE and joined AEW. The Immortal said that after his retirement in WWE, he didn’t have an idea to wrestle again. His only plan was to have a cinematic match with The Undertaker.
He tried so hard, but wasn’t able to come to an agreement. Sting added that time AEW CEO, Tony Khan approached him if he could work for AEW. Sting took some time and when things with WWE didn’t work out, he left WWE to join AEW.
The Icon said,
“It wasn’t a goal of mine to get back in the ring. The only thing I thought I might do is have a cinematic match against Undertaker when I was with WWE. We weren’t able to come to an agreement. Tony [Schiavone] reached out to me and asked if I wanted to come play and let him know. A year later and I thought WWE isn’t working out and I didn’t want to disappear with my tail between my legs. I hate that.”
