The “Ring General” is the current World Heavyweight Champion
Gunther, the current WWE World Heavyweight Champion, has established himself as one of the most fearsome opponents in sports entertainment.
Gunther, often known as “The Ring General,” has elevated his performances to new heights, becoming an unstoppable force within the squared circle.
Beyond his in-ring domination, his work as a heel distinguishes him from many of his peers. Gunther’s attitude, paired with his ruthless aggressiveness, has made him one of the most disliked characters in WWE today.
Unlike many heels who use underhanded techniques, The In Ring General’s strength stems from his ability to back up every brag and insult.
His contempt for his opponents, unrepentant attitude, and ability to demolish anybody who enters his path have cemented him as probably the finest villain in WWE.
Throughout his career, he has given fans several jaw-dropping moments, but some stand out as defining examples of his vicious personality. Here are some devastating moments that confirmed Gunther as WWE’s top heel.
Mocking Bret Hart in front of his home fans by mentioning Goldberg as his favorite wrestler
One of The In Ring General’s most vicious moments occurred on a recent broadcast of Monday Night RAW, when the World Heavyweight Champion was in Calgary, Canada, the homeland of WWE superstar Bret “The Hitman” Hart.
In one of his most savage promos, the In-Ring General unleashed a nasty verbal strike at the WWE Hall of Famer. While standing in front of Hart and his fellow Canadians, Gunther mentioned Bill Goldberg, a name that Bret Hart dislikes.
For those unaware with the incident, Hart has long blamed Goldberg for ruining his wrestling career after sustaining a serious concussion from a kick during their battle at WCW Starrcade in 1999.
Gunther’s decision to bring up Goldberg in front of Bret Hart, especially in his hometown, was planned and spiteful, illustrating how far he is prepared to go to get under people’s skin.
His ability to hurl such profoundly personal attacks enraged Hart and inflamed the WWE Universe, cementing his status as the most despised heel on the roster.
Calling Damian Priest “street trash”
Before winning the World Heavyweight Championship, Gunther had a feud with former champion Damian Priest. Priest, one of WWE’s most physically strong superstars, had a rough background in Puerto Rico, having to struggle for all he had.
This made him a relatable and sympathetic character for many admirers. However, Gunther, ever the opportunistic monster, had no mercy.
During a promotional skirmish, Gunther brutally ridiculed Priest’s past, dismissing his difficult childhood. He went so far as to call the Puerto Rican superstar “street trash,” claiming that someone with Priest’s background was never destined to be a champion.
This cold and stinging criticism struck a chord with viewers, as Gunther turned a real-life struggle into a caustic indictment of his opponent’s worth. Not only did Gunther insult Priest’s path to success, but he also infuriated supporters with the arrogance of his statements.
Gunther made Chad Gable’s daughter cry
Perhaps the most stunning and nasty incident of Gunther’s career occurred during his Intercontinental Championship battle against Chad Gable on RAW in 2023.
The match itself was a spectacular display of both men’s powers, with Gable pushing Gunther to his limits in one of the most difficult confrontations of his career. Despite Gable’s heroic efforts, The Ring General emerged victorious, keeping his championship.
What happened after this scene is really awful. Gable’s children, who were in the crowd to support their father, were genuinely devastated by the verdict. The sight of them in tears was painful for the audience, but for Gunther, it was pure bliss.
In a post-match interview, Gunther stated that watching Gable’s children weep made him happy. It was a lesson that stunned the WWE Universe and solidified his reputation as an unrepentant heel who revels in the suffering of others.
