The American Nightmare is one of the biggest baby faces in the WWE!

One of the biggest baby faces in the WWE, Cody Rhodes, has bounced back from losing his title against John Cena at WrestleMania 41 to securing a spot in the finals of the King of the Ring tournament. The winner of the 2025 King of the Ring tournament will get a title shot against the Champion of their brand.

The American Nightmare is set to face Randy Orton in the finals at Night of Champions this Saturday. However, more than the upcoming clash, Rhodes’ recent comments about a potential heel turn have created a lot of buzz.

What Happened?

During his conversation with former Good Morning Football host Kay Adams at Fanatics Fest recently, Cody was asked if he was tired of being a good guy. The American Nightmare, responding to the question, hinted that he is likely at the tail end of his face run. He also pointed out that there’s a limit to how long fans will continue cheering for the same character.

“I don’t get tired of it, because you get to have all of this and these moment. I do think we’re probably at the tail end of it though… Cause there’s only so much someone can like you. I would love to do it until the end of my career. But there’s only so much, ‘We do his WOAH, we cheer for him’. At a certain point they want to see somebody else. I get that, and that’s where you have to change as a character.”

Adams then asked about how she’ll recognize when her favorite turns into a heel. Rhodes replied, stating that she will find out when WWE fans begin to complain on X (Twitter) and Instagram.

“You’ll know because X and Instagram will hate it. Because today, heels are like, ‘Oh, that’s a cool heel. We’re loving John Cena’ No. If you’re if you’re burying it and hate it and talking about how you don’t want it on your TV? That’s what an actual bad guy is.”

When asked about a timeframe for his heel turn, Cody also revealed that if Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson had his way, he would have turned heel already. He also stated that he might follow The Rock’s lead, given

“I think you have a good solid year, maybe even three years… because I am not changing until I’m changed, if that makes any sense….

“But if The Rock had it his way, I would have been changed already, so I think he sees something that maybe I don’t see, and that’s a very smart individual. So maybe I follow his lead. Maybe not.”

The bigger picture

The potential heel turn tease came before the Elimination Chamber in February when The Rock made an offer for Cody Rhodes to sell his soul. While Cody refused, John Cena accepted the offer, turning heel for the first time in his career. The segment made a potential heel run for Cody possible for many fans.

Cody Rhodes’ comments about pointing out that there’s a limit to how long fans will continue cheering for the same character are very true and something which John Cena has felt firsthand when fans got tired of his upbeat character.
