The American Nightmare won the title in the main event of WrestleMania 40
In 2016, as a result of the WWE Draft, WWE introduced the Universal Championship to counter the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The Universal title was initially a part of the Raw brand, to indicate that the title was made in red colour. In 2019, “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt, took the Universal title to the SmackDown brand changing the colour to Blue, making it the primary asset of the SmackDown brand.
In 2022, the Universal Champion, Roman Reigns also won the WWE Championship and unified it to become the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. He started defending both titles as one.
However on the 1000th day of Roman’s Universal Championship reign, Triple H awarded Roman Reigns with a single Undisputed WWE Universal Championship instead of the two separate belts.
Cody Rhodes won the title at WrestleMania 40 by ending Roman Reigns’ 1316 days historical reign. At this stage, it is reported that Cody’s title has been renamed.
“Undisputed WWE Championship”
WWE on their official website updated Cody Rhodes as the New Undisputed WWE Champion, instead of representing him as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. It is quite noticeable that ever since Cody Rhodes won the title, he has been introduced only as the Undisputed WWE Champion.
After several hints for weeks, the company has officially called for the new name, without any official announcements. This change has silently deactivated the Universal Championship, which has been active from 2016 to 2024.
WWE has recently made the change to the Raw Tag Team titles, by introducing new titles with the new name. The Raw Tag Team Championship will now be called the World Tag Team Championship. Triple H also said that the change in title names is a part of the beginning of the new Paul “Triple H” Levesque era.
What’s next for Cody Rhodes?
Cody Rhodes will be defending his Undisputed WWE Championship title for the very first time at the upcoming Backlash 2024 Pay-per-view in France. Rhodes will be defending the title against either AJ Styles or LA Knight, which will be decided this week on SmackDown, both of them will be fighting to become the #1 Contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship title this week.
