‘The Scottish Psychopath’ Drew McIntyre worked hard after being released by the WWE in 2014, and during his second run, which kicked off in 2017 as he slowly rose to the top, becoming one of the biggest stars, delivering constantly in front of fans.
McIntyre has seen immense highs in his second WWE run. McIntyre’s career has reached impressive heights in the past five years, highlighted by a Royal Rumble win, a World Championship run, and a standout rivalry with CM Punk in 2024.
McIntyre also bagged the NXT Championship to start his second run, along with the WWE RAW Tag Team Championship (with Dolph Ziggler) for the second time after being promoted to the main roster. While Backlash doesn’t hold the same global cachet as WrestleMania or Royal Rumble, it’s always been the night where consequences from WrestleMania boil over.
McIntyre made his WWE Backlash PLE debut in 2020, which emanated from the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, USA. McIntyre defended the WWE Championship in the singles clash, pinning Bobby Lashley to win the match.
While his second Backlash appearance came in a Triple Threat match in 2021, where Bobby Lashley retained the WWE title over McIntyre and Braun Strowman. At the 2022 Backlash PLE, McIntyre teamed up with RK-Bro (Randy Orton & Riddle) in a losing effort against The Bloodline (Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso & Roman Reigns).

Drew McIntyre battled Jacob Fatu, Damian Priest, and LA Knight in a fatal four-way match with Fatu’s United States Championship on the line. McIntyre was coming off a win against Damian Priest in a Sin City Street Fight at WrestleMania 41 and was looking to capture the U.S. Title in St. Louis on May 10th.
McIntyre failed in his attempt to capture the US title and become a Grand Slam Champion, as Damian Priest once again played spoiler and pulled the referee out of the ring as Drew was covering Knight. The sequence kicked off a brawl between the two, which ended in Priest landing the South of Heaven Chokeslam from the production crate through a table. Fatu then pinned Knight to retain the title.
