John Cena will soon face Gunther in his final WWE match

WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray believes the final chapter of John Cena’s storied career may not close next weekend. While the 17-time world champion is scheduled to wrestle his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., Ray thinks fans shouldn’t assume this is the actual end.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, the veteran analyst said he has never fully bought into the idea that Cena’s retirement finishes in the nation’s capital. Instead, he suspects the Franchise Player could keep going long enough to reach WrestleMania 42 next year in Las Vegas.

Ray noted that the situation feels bigger than a send-off on a standard PLE stage, suggesting a dramatic twist could still be in play.

Bully Ray suggests WrestleMania may be the “real” final stop

While discussing John Cena’s upcoming showdown against Gunther, set after the Ring General won the Last Time Is Now Tournament, Ray emphasized he doesn’t “have a problem” with WWE using the event as a launching point for future storylines.

“But if we could use Saturday Night’s Main Event as a jumping point into something that’s going to move us into the future, like Brock Lesnar and Gunther, I don’t have a problem with that,” Ray said.

However, he immediately clarified that he is not abandoning his long-held prediction.

“I also am not taking my $1 bet off the table that I made a long time ago. For some reason, I don’t think this ends in Washington, D.C. for John Cena.”

The Rock factor and a five percent shot

Ray painted a vivid picture of what he believes could happen. He said he “would not be shocked” if, amid the joyful celebration of Cena’s so-called final match, fans suddenly hear the familiar note: “If you smell what The Rock is cooking.”

To him, the idea of Cena’s final match happening in D.C. “just doesn’t sound right.”

He added, “What sounds right is John Cena, last match, WrestleMania, Las Vegas.”

Ray compared the scenario to The Godfather, saying Cena could be pulled back in just when he thinks he’s out. He believes the only man capable of doing that is The Rock, and a WrestleMania showdown between the two would be “massive.”

Yet he admits the odds are slim, giving it just a five percent chance. Ultimately, Ray expects Gunther to win and for Cena to pass the torch, though he maintains that a Rock–Cena spectacle wouldn’t disrupt other WrestleMania plans and could generate enormous global buzz.

Is John Cena officially retiring at Saturday Night’s Main Event?

Yes, that is the current plan, though Bully Ray believes the retirement tour could extend.

Why does Bully Ray think WrestleMania is a more fitting final stage?

He feels Cena deserves a grander finale, and WrestleMania offers unmatched spectacle and global reach.
