John Cena is currently on his WWE retirement tour
After more than two decades at the very top of sports entertainment, John Cena has confirmed that his time in the WWE ring is coming to an end.
The 17-time world champion isn’t walking away because of fading passion or declining performance, he’s doing it for a reason that’s as selfless as it is personal: to make way for the next generation of WWE superstars.
Why is John Cena stepping aside?
Cena has been open about his decision, making it clear that the WWE roster is packed with hungry, young talent ready for the spotlight.
“If I hang around any longer than now, I’m just taking time away from the young guys to make an impact. It’s time,” Cena told reporters, as quoted by multiple outlets.
Reflecting on his own journey, Cena recalled his early years in the business.
“I remember being a young 20-something in Kentucky, wrestling in front of 20 people every night, crossing my fingers and hoping to get a call to come up to WWE television,” he told fans.
That memory shaped a promise he made to himself and the WWE Universe.
“I should be as graceful exiting the business as I was excited to enter,” Cena said.
John Cena will make his last WWE appearance in December 2025
Cena’s official retirement match is set for December 13, 2025, at the TD Garden in Boston, his home state of Massachusetts. The bout will mark the end of his farewell tour, which he pitched to WWE executives earlier this year as both a celebration of his legacy and a chance for fans to say goodbye.
The past year has been filled with milestone moments, from an unexpected heel turn at WrestleMania 41 to heartfelt interviews where he has reassured fans that this truly is the final chapter.
Speaking on NBC’s Today Show, Cena explained the balancing act of knowing when to leave.
“It’s a battle of, ‘How long do I fight those red flags before it could be counterproductive?’ I still look good, I feel good, I still feel like I can perform at WWE level, but I also think it’s time for me to step aside and let the young talent step forward.”
He added:
“I would hate to, just because I’m hanging around too long, take a dream away from a kid like me and maybe not have the opportunity to have someone have an impact on the business.”
Why did John Cena choose 2025 for retirement?
Cena promised himself he would retire as soon as he felt he was losing a step. He wants to give fans closure and allow younger stars to take the spotlight.
Will John Cena ever wrestle again in WWE after retirement?
According to Cena, this is the end. “There is no way I will return to the ring after December,” he said, making it clear there will be no comebacks.
How does Cena view the future of WWE?
Cena is optimistic, saying, “The athleticism is far beyond anything I’ve ever been capable of.” He believes the company is in “spectacular” hands.
