The first draft was used in 2002 by the promotion

After making a return in 2023 following one-year of absence, the WWE Draft has been used by the the company to refresh the roster of Raw and SmackDown when a brand extension is in effect.

Talents from the developmental brand of NXT are also eligible to be drafted to the main roster. It helps in creating new storylines, matches, and fresh opportunities for talents.

The 2024 edition of the draft was held as a two-night event which began with the April 26 episode of Friday Night SmackDown and concluded with the April 29 episode of Monday Night Raw.

The 18th edition of the draft in 2024 was the first draft held under the new TKO banner. The 2024 draft results came into effect from the May 6 episode of Monday Night Raw. The promotion is yet to announce the date and further details of this year’s edition of WWE Draft.

The 19th edition of WWE Draft will reportedly take place in April

Ahead of Raw’s historic debut on Netflix and the promotion’s transition to the streaming giant, WWE announced the transfer window among the talents of RAW and SmackDown. Top names such as Logan Paul and Alicia Taylor have been transferred to the Red Brand while Wyatt Sicks (Uncle Howdy, Erick Rowan, Dexter Lumis, Joe Gacy & Nikki Cross) have been moved to SmackDown during the transfer window.

Lilian Garcia, Braun Strowman, Joe Tessitore, and Wade Barett have also been transferred to Friday Night SmackDown during the transfer window. Additionally, Corey Graves was moved back to NXT from SmackDown. The use of the transfer window led many fans to believe that the 2025 edition of the draft was not happening, while others awaited the announcement.

A recent report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider has now provided an update on the situation. In a recent Q&A, Johnson was about an update on the next WWE draft. Johnson didn’t confirm a date but stated that it will likely be following the WrestleMania.

“The last we have heard is that there will be one after Wrestlemania 41,” Johnson wrote.

WWE Draft provides an opportunity for talents from the NXT brand who gets a chance to showcase their skill and breakthroughs to become top stars. The inaugural Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria is the prime example of the opportunity the WWE Draft provides.
