The Championship was introduced in 2021.

The WWE NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship is defended in the company’s developmental brand, NXT, then appeared briefly on the main roster brand, SmackDown, before being retired. The title was founded on March 10, 2021, and Dakota Kai and Raquel González were the first champions.

On the June 23, 2023, broadcast of SmackDown, the title was combined into the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, thereby retiring it, with Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn acknowledged as the final champions.

The belt was established as a consequence of a contentious conclusion to a WWE Women’s Tag Team belt bout. Dakota Kai and Raquel González won the first-ever Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, earning a match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, which was available to NXT at the time, but they were unable to win the title due to a controversial finish in which Kai was submitted despite the fact that she was not the legal woman.

As a result of the controversy and their victory in the Dusty Classic, Kai and González were granted the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship. NXT was considered WWE’s “third brand” when it was first debuted. In September 2021, however, NXT returned to its former role as WWE’s developing brand.

WWE NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship Legacy

In December 2018, WWE established the Women’s Tag Team Championship for Raw, SmackDown, and NXT. The inaugural champions were crowned in February 2019. On the March 3, 2021, episode of NXT, Dakota Kai and Raquel González, after winning the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, faced WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. A controversial finish led to an argument between WWE officials Adam Pearce and William Regal.

Subsequently, on March 10, 2021, Regal introduced the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship, awarding it to Kai and González. However, they lost the titles the same night to Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart.

In the 2023 WWE Draft, NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn were drafted to SmackDown. On June 9, they were challenged by WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler to a unification match, which took place on June 23. Rousey and Baszler won, unifying the titles and making the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship available to NXT again. The NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship was retired, with Fyre and Dawn recognized as the final champions.

The unification match was delayed due to injuries. Fightful noted confusion around the creation of the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship, given the existing WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship and the limited number of women’s tag teams. The unified title will appear on NXT “when needed.”
