Dominik Mysterio was set to defend the IC title last week in Riyadh!
WWE’s trip to Saudi Arabia saw them deliver two back-to-back banger shows of SmackDown and the 11th edition of Night of Champions, both of which emanated from the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The PLE featured two title clashes, the finals of the King and Queen of the Ring tournament, a street fight, and a singles match. However, fans were left disappointed when the promotion pulled the third title clash from the show.
What Happened?
On the June 16 episode of Monday Night Raw, AJ Styles met with GM Nick Aldis, who was filling in for Adam Pearce. Styles had just defeated JD McDonagh and evaded an attack by the Judgment Day; he also had the IC title but handed it to the GM without hesitation.
Aldis then announced that Styles will now have the opportunity to get the title back at Night of Champions as he will battle Dominik on June 28 in Riyadh with the IC title on the line.
However, on the 23 June episode of Monday Night Raw, GM Adam Pearce informs AJ Styles that Dominik Mysterio is injured and is unable to compete; therefore, the match is pulled from the PLE. Styles is still next in line for the title.
Mysterio in an interview with Jackie Redmond later in the show seemingly confirmed a rib injury, stating that his ribs hurt. According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider , Mysterio is dealing with a legitimate rib cage injury. He is not expected to be out of action for a lengthy period of time.
The news left fans disappointed as they wanted the two stars to battle, with some even hoping for Styles to win the IC title.
The match is now being discussed for SummerSlam 2025
According to WrestleVotes, the scrapped clash between Styles and Mysterio is now being discussed internally for the upcoming SummerSlam PLE.
“Don’t think the match takes place the next Saturday night, think it’s too soon. Plus, that card’s filling up and they’re presenting it as this PLE, this must-watch, which it will be, but it’s only two hours, about an hour and 27 minutes with commercial.
So, I think that card is gonna be full enough. So, I’d expect that match to happen at SummerSlam and I think it’s gonna be great when it does happen. So, MetLife Stadium looks like the place for that match,”
The 2025 edition of SummerSlam is scheduled as a two-night affair for August 2 and August 3 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
