WWE SmackDown lit up Pittsburgh with an explosive Fourth of July edition that was all about tag team warfare, big surprises, and storyline twists that promise to shake the foundations of the blue brand heading into SummerSlam season.
Not a single singles match took place on the night, with every contest being a multi-person affair, proving WWE’s renewed focus on its tag team division.
The show kicked off with Cody Rhodes trying to address the WWE Universe, but Randy Orton quickly interrupted. Their tense verbal exchange hinted at deeper cracks in their uneasy alliance ahead of their match at WWE Night of Champions.
But things took a sharp turn when Drew McIntyre returned in underwhelming fashion, mocking both men and calling them “betas” before eating an RKO. While McIntyre’s motivations remain murky, he’s now set to face Orton next weekend at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.
The main event saw a rare and shocking clean finish as Jacob Fatu pinned Solo Sikoa in tag action alongside Jimmy Uso and JC Mateo. It was a surprising moment of vulnerability for the self-proclaimed Bloodline leader, but any sign of weakness was quickly erased when his new faction destroyed Fatu and Uso post-match.
Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss also made waves by winning a chaotic triple threat tag match to qualify for the WWE Evolution Women’s Tag Team Title Fatal 4-Way.
While their chemistry remains shaky, their win proved they could coexist, for now. Meanwhile, Andrade and Rey Fenix stole the show in a must-watch tag match against Fraxiom, picking up a huge win in what many are calling one of the best matches of the year.
Looking ahead, next week’s SmackDown is shaping up to be just as eventful. The Wyatt Sicks will challenge The Street Profits for the WWE Tag Team Championship, while Ron Killings takes on Aleister Black in a high-stakes singles bout.
With SummerSlam fast approaching, tensions and tag team drama continue to rise on Friday nights.takes. If this week was any indication, SmackDown isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
