Gunther won the World Heavyweight Championship at WWE SummerSlam

At SummerSlam 2024, Gunther challenged Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship. It was one of the main events of the show, where they brutally punished each other, with blood & cuts all over the body. In the final moments of the match, Priest with the South of Heaven Chokeslam almost pinned Gunther, however, Finn Balor saved the match, by betraying Priest.

The betrayal from his friend distracted Damian and Gunther took it as an advantage to win the match and become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion. As The Ring General’s era officially begins, here we take a look at five of the potential opponents for his World Heavyweight Championship.

5. Finn Balor

At SummerSlam 2024, Finn Balor played a major role in Gunther winning the World Heavyweight Championship from Damian Priest. Balor was the one who kept Gunther’s leg on the ropes to save him and mentally distracted Priest, which caused this title.

Since Balor favored The Ring General, he might return Balor by giving him the world title shot. Last summer, Balor struggled hard to have his hands on the world title but failed. After that Priest won the title, and Balor was written away from the world title picture. As Gunther won the title, he can now claim his world title shot.

4. Ilja Dragunov

Ilja Dragunov is one of the most extremely powerful, highly athletic, superhuman, who has been making big impacts in the company within a short frame. He is the one among two wrestlers who have defeated The Ring General in WWE.

Both have a long history in WWE and even before in the European Independent Circuits. Since the upcoming PLE Bash in Berlin is happening in Germany, it would be a perfect stage for the two Europeans to clash. It is a dream match for many and this could be the selling point for the show.

3. Damian Priest

Damian Priest after losing his title to the Mighty Austrian due to distraction at SummerSlam, might rightfully claim for a rematch at Bash in Berlin. Priest has all the right to ask for a rematch, which Gunther cannot deny. To avoid another outside interference, they could opt for a steel cage or a Hell in a Cell match, as Priest can have a clean match in the process to recapture the title

2. Drew McIntyre

The main battle between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk began when Drew got screwed by Punk in the pursuit of becoming the world champion. However, Drew defeated Punk at SummerSlam to end his feud. Drew could now move on to pursue his championship dreams by challenging Gunther for the world title. Both have a lot of history over the Intercontinental Championship, now Drew could reinstate the feud by challenging for the world title.

1. Seth Rollins

The first-ever World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins lost his opportunity for the title, when he lost his title shot at Money in the Bank, due to outside interference from CM Punk & McIntyre’s MITB cash-in. Although Rollins lost the opportunity to challenge for the title, Priest assured a guaranteed title shot after SummerSlam.

With Priest losing his title, he can now challenge for the world title, without breaching the gentleman’s agreement. Considering this, Rollins could be the next challenger for Gunther’s World Heavyweight Championship at Bash in Berlin.
