Cody Rhodes might need a new direction following a major loss in WWE.

The WWE Universe witnessed a major shocker at the end of the January 9, 2026, edition of Friday Night SmackDown. Following a physically battering Three Stages of Hell match, Cody Rhodes dropped the Undisputed WWE title to Drew McIntyre.

With his second World title reign over, here are five possible directions for The American Nightmare as the road to WrestleMania draws close:

5. Royal Rumble

With the WrestleMania season beginning soon, the first major stop is the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event. Cody Rhodes could decide to earn another title shot by entering the 30-man-over-the-top-rope melee, which could mark his record-setting third win in the Rumble match after being successful in 2023 and 2024.

4. Feud with Jacob Fatu

The re-emergence of Jacob Fatu at the end of the Undisputed WWE title match was a major reason for Cody Rhodes to lose the belt to Drew McIntyre. The Prodigal Son could have revenge on his mind, which could lead to the start of his feud with Fatu and culminate in a high-profile match at a major show.

3. Heel Turn

In another shocking turn of events, Cody Rhodes could be revealed as Jacob Fatu’s mystery attacker. The Samoan Werewolf could make this revelation, leading to Rhodes unleashing his dark side and finally turning heel. This could mark the start of a narcissist Rhodes run, which would be a fresh direction for his WWE career.

2. Rematch with Drew McIntyre

An expected booking could see Cody Rhodes be granted a straight title rematch against Drew McIntyre, presumably at the Royal Rumble PLE. As Rhodes has defeated McIntyre on previous occasions, he could use this bid to have an opportunity at reclaiming the Undisputed WWE title, which he lost due to Jacob Fatu’s interference.

1. Feud with CM Punk

On January 12, 2026, an episode of RAW, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk mentioned Cody Rhodes’ title loss on SmackDown. With The Second City Saint welcoming new challengers for his title, the road to WrestleMania could see Rhodes emerge as the top contender, leading to a marquee match at a major Premium Live Event.

What was the match stipulation for Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre on SmackDown?

Three Stages of Hell match- First fall: Wrestling match, Second Fall: Falls Count Anywhere, and Third Fall: Steel Cage.

Is Cody Rhodes turning heel?

As of now, there are no updates regarding a heel turn for Rhodes. However, reports suggest a character change for the former champion.
