Gunther lost the World title to Jey Uso recently

WWE Backlash 2025 is almost here and will air live from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri, on Saturday, May 10.

The event features a strong lineup, including Becky Lynch facing Lyra Valkyria in a heated singles match and John Cena defending his world title against longtime rival Randy Orton. Another anticipated showdown will see Dominik Mysterio go head-to-head with Penta.

However, one of the most talked-about matches heading into Backlash is the clash between Gunther and Pat McAfee.

The rivalry took a violent turn recently when Gunther launched a vicious attack on McAfee, choking him out in a shocking moment that led to Gunther’s suspension. With tensions at an all-time high, the two are now set to settle things in the ring.

As fans gear up for this explosive encounter, we explore the top three possible finishes for the match, including a referee stoppage due to blood loss and the surprise return of a WWE Hall of Famer.

3. Pat McAfee beats Gunther, shocking the WWE universe

Pat McAfee has done a lot in his lifetime. He has played in the NFL, hosted television and web events, and works as a WWE analyst. He has also dabbled with professional wrestling.

The former NFL player has wrestled seven times for WWE. During his time with the company, Pat has defeated Austin Theory, Baron Corbin, and The Miz in singles matches. Still, he is not a competent wrestler, and he is clearly heading into Backlash as a huge underdog.

Pat has previously bucked the odds, and he might do it again at Backlash. With a fluke rollup, McAfee may surprise Gunther and win. While it would not be a decisive triumph, Pat might yet surprise the world with a win.

2. Gunther chokes the hell out of Pat McAfee

Gunther is an intriguing figure in wrestling nowadays. Unlike other WWE stars, he does not rely on a single finisher. In reality, he uses more than two finishes. The Ring General concludes contests using a variety of maneuvers.

Gunther commonly utilizes a chokehold, which is a variant on the basic sleeper hold. He did this to make Pat McAfee pass out on WWE RAW a few weeks ago, and he tried to do the same to Michael Cole earlier in the same segment.

When Pat and Gunther face off, ‘The Ring General’ might lock in his hold and suffocate Pat McAfee to win. Pat would probably have no way out of the hold, so if Gunther locks it in, the match is very surely over.

1. Goldberg makes his return, costing Gunther his match against Pat McAfee

Pat McAfee winning on his own seems doubtful. Yes, as previously said, a fluke rollup is possible, but being feasible does not imply that it is the most likely alternative. Pat will need assistance if he wants to stand tall at the WWE Premium Live Event.

Pat might receive assistance from a WWE Hall of Famer: Goldberg. Da Man is planning a retirement match this year, and many believe it will be with Gunther following an argument they had last year at Bad Blood.

If the referee is knocked down during the fight, Goldberg might emerge and strike Gunther with the Spear. Pat may then pull off an unexpected victory. This sets up The Ring General vs. Da Man, maybe at SummerSlam this summer.
