Top three possible paths for Cody Rhodes following WWE Royal Rumble 2025

The American Nightmare emerged victorious at the first PLE of 2025

‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes has been true to his words of being a workhorse champion and has defended the Undisputed WWE title constantly since winning it at WrestleMania 40.

Rhodes defended the title in a ladder match against Kevin Owens at the Royal Rumble PLE which was held on February 1 at the Lucas Oil Stadium. Despite tough opposition, Cody was able to decimate KO and climb the ladder to capture the title.

However, as the WWE WrestleMania 41 PLE approaches the champion has to choose his next step closely as multiple challenges are vowing for a chance at dethroning him. Here are three possible paths for the American Nightmare following the win at the Royal Rumble PLE.

3. Continue his feud with Kevin Owens

The American Nightmare has defeated Kevin Owens back-to-back at the December 14 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event and at the Royal Rumble PLE. However, considering the deep hatred Owens has harbored for Rhodes and anyone who even thinks of siding with him, there is a high probability that Owens won’t let the champion enjoy his victory.

Similar to his recent attack on this week’s episode of Raw, where KO turned on his longtime friend Sami Zayn, he might attack an already injured champion on tonight’s episode of SmackDown, where Rhodes is scheduled for an appearance.

2. Battle Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41

Jey Uso shocked the entire WWE universe when he eliminated John Cena to win the 2025 men’s Royal Rumble match. Jey has now the option to choose either the Undisputed WWE Champion or the World Heavyweight Champion Gunther for Mania.

While Jey is leaning towards Gunther due to their history and because he considers Cody a friend. Similar to Ripley on 02/03 Raw, Cody might confront Jey who is also set for an appearance on tonight’s SmackDown, and ask Jey to pick him over Gunther for Mania. A win over Jey would further legitimize him as a champion and would give him a fresh new opponent after battling Owens.

1. Take some well-deserved time off

The American Nightmare has defended the title eight times after winning it last April against Roman Reigns. Rhodes has suffered beatdowns and punishment in those matches and he has recently suffered multiple attacks from Kevin Owens ahead of their clash at the Rumble PLE.

Rhodes also suffered injuries during the ladder match last week, and the best thing for him should be to take some time off and heal from his injuries. This would not only help in his recovery but also give him a much-needed break after the brutal showdown at the Lucas Oil Stadium.
