Kevin Owens is one of the biggest names in WWE

In the ever-changing world of professional wrestling, the contracts season is upon us, prompting speculations and transitions between the two major players: WWE and AEW. Recent noteworthy moves include Ricochet, who has just left WWE to make his much-anticipated debut at AEW’s All-In.

Similarly, Bobby Lashley has recently departed WWE, with rumors about a variety of potential avenues for his next outlet— either heading to AEW or potentially venturing into a boxing match at Misfits.

While you may hear a lot of rumors every year about a top star making the move, the volume of them is relatively low considering all those who are signed are signed for for long periods.

Among these changes, the fans are most particularly anxious about one star: Kevin Owens, Cody Rhodes‘ challenger for the Undisputed Championship at Bash in Berlin.

Owens’ WWE contract is set to expire in early 2025, which might be concerning for his fans, especially considering his immense contributions to the organization.

Speculation also surrounds the potential of Owens jumping to AEW, but given his fruitful history with WWE and a current contract that keeps him in place until 2025—and possibly beyond—KO is likely staying put. Here are five reasons why:

Triple H’s Influence

Owens has been viewed as a “Triple H guy” for quite some time now, dating back to his run in NXT where he was very regularly featured and booked as the top heel. This portrayal helped him become a successful main-eventer upon transitioning into the main roster.

In kayfabe, Triple H was the man who “chose” Kevin Owens to become the Universal Champion and perhaps it symbolized the trust and faith that he has always placed in him. Now, under the creative direction of Triple H, Owens is one of WWE’s most important stars and he remains a key player in significant storylines and main events. It would be inaccurate and foolish to walk away from this blessed ground.

The Main Event Player

Over the last four years, Owens has already main-evented WrestleMania on two separate occasions against industry legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin as well a critically acclaimed five-star classic tag team bout with Sami Zayn against arguably the greatest tag team of all time —The Usos.

He has always remained in the upper mid-card, feuding with factions such as The Judgment Day and The Bloodline despite a few repackagings. And now, taking on Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed Championship is more evidence of his sustained presence in the current landscape of WWE.

Relationships and Friendships

Citing the famous quote from Michael Scott of “The Office,” “The people you work with are, when you get down to it, your very best friends,” this sentiment holds for Owens. He shares a long-standing friendship with Sami Zayn, stemming from their time on the indie circuit to WWE.

Beyond Zayn, Owens shares a close bond with colleagues like Cathy Kelley, Liv Morgan, and Randy Orton. Given the value of these relationships, making a radical career shift at this stage of his career would be exceedingly unlikely.

Uncertainties with AEW

Owens’ next landing spot would naturally be AEW if he were to exit the WWE. Yet for all the dream matches that might be a potential draw for the fans in the short run, not every former WWE talent has seamlessly transitioned into success there.

Wrestling stars like Rusev, Cesaro and Aleister Black who were underutilized in WWE, haven’t exactly shined with AEW as anticipated. Owens may feel some of the same challenges, which opens up a can of worms that he should not even be willing to pop off at this point in his career, particularly since WWE treats him so well.

Financial and Career Stability

While nobody is denying the fact that AEW, led by Tony Khan, can offer Kevin Owens a massive money contract that may rival WWE’s offers, the security and longevity of it all remain uncertain. AEW has faced difficulties in securing a new TV deal due to consistently low viewership, and All In drew fewer than 3,000 attendees this year.

This lack of financial stability in AEW means that there could be layoffs if an individual does not perform to expectations.

WWE, in contrast, offers Owens not just more secure and potentially increasing finances but also heightened exposure to mainstream media and greater promotional opportunities. As a result, the chances of Kevin Owens walking away from the WWE is almost negligible.

Under WWE’s current success and Triple H’s helm of creative control, Owens has the potential to achieve extraordinary career milestones, including one more potential world championship reign.
