Rey Fenix left AEW this year
Rey Fenix is officially a WWE-contracted star, according to a new report. Fightful Select has confirmed that Fenix has signed his contract after getting his medicals done over the last few weeks.
After months of speculation and some drama, Rey Fenix officially is on his way to WWE. Fightful Select Español reports the 34-year-old luchador has signed with the company, and will be debuting on Smackdown soon.
It’s unknown when he’ll make his actual debut, although teases for his first appearance began running last week.
His trip to the WWE has not been without controversy. Rey Fenix apparently had a significant falling out with AEW after more than five years in the organization, citing claimed discussions with WWE last autumn.
His real-life brother and tag team partner, Penta, was in a similar circumstances, but his contract expired at the end of 2024, allowing him to make his WWE debut during the inaugural Raw on Netflix.
Fenix’s arrival to WWE follows his departure from All Elite Wrestling, where he had ruled as the AEW Tag Team Champion alongside his brother Penta. Fenix and Penta allegedly attempted to join WWE late last year, with the latter succeeding. In Fenix’s situation, AEW CEO Tony Khan included injury time in his AEW contract, putting his move on hold until later in 2025. Khan eventually altered his decision, releasing Rey Fenix from his AEW contract.
According to the current story, Fenix has also had his WWE physicals in recent weeks. Fenix won the AEW International Championship, Tag Team Championship, and Trios Championship during his tenure with the promotion. His battles with Penta against The Young Bucks received critical praise, with their cage match at All Out 2021 regarded as one of the company’s greatest.
Rey Fenix will join the growing list of former AEW wrestlers making the move to WWE. Over the previous year, WWE has added Ethan Page, Ricky Saints (originally Ricky Starks), Shawn Spears (known as Tye Dillinger during his initial WWE tenure) and Penta. Penta debuted on “WWE Raw” in January, defeating former WWE Raw Tag Team Champion Chad Gable.
