Randy Orton is currently off WWE TV due to an injury
Randy Orton’s return to WWE is still uncertain as he continues to recover from a devastating neck injury caused by a Piledriver from Kevin Owens. However, when The Viper makes his comeback, fans should brace themselves for the unexpected perhaps a shocking betrayal of his long-time friend, Cody Rhodes.
For months, speculation about a Randy Orton heel turn has been growing. After all, a villainous Orton has always been a magnet for attention and heat. With WrestleMania 41 on the horizon, Orton may have plans of his own, including reclaiming the WWE Championship. Here are three signs that suggest Orton might turn on Rhodes before the big event.
3. Randy Orton blaming Cody Rhodes for his fall out with Kevin Owens
Randy Orton and Kevin Owens aren’t exactly best friends, but their animosity has reached new levels. Owens even blamed Cody Rhodes for Orton’s injury during a heated exchange on SmackDown.
This fractured relationship could set the stage for Orton’s return. Imagine The Viper showing up at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 14 to support Rhodes against Owens only to betray Rhodes after the match. Orton could use this moment to align his return with a dramatic heel turn.
2. Randy Orton’s long history of betrayal
Randy Orton’s career is riddled with instances of backstabbing and betrayal. Whether it was turning on Edge in 2020 or dismantling alliances in the past, Orton has never been the most trustworthy individual.
Cody Rhodes once mentored by Orton in The Legacy faction, may now find himself on the receiving end of The Viper’s venom. Orton’s jealousy and frustration especially given Rhodes’ meteoric rise could ignite a rift. After all, Cody no longer needs Orton’s guidance, which might not sit well with the veteran.
1. Randy Orton wants another run as WWE Champion
The Viper is a 10-time WWE Champion, but it’s been four long years since his last reign. Orton’s most recent title victory was at Hell in a Cell 2020, where he defeated Drew McIntyre. Unfortunately, his reign was short-lived, ending just weeks later on RAW.
Now 44 years old, Orton knows his time in the ring is limited. His desire to hold the WWE Championship one more time could drive him to desperate measures. What better way to reclaim the title than to target the current champion, Cody Rhodes, setting up a blockbuster clash at WrestleMania 41?
