The build for Backlash will conclude tonight on SmackDown.
The May 8 go-home edition of WWE SmackDown will conclude the build towards Backlash 2026 as WWE gears up for the PLE on Saturday in Tampa. Live from the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, the show tonight will feature the final face-offs before the PLE.
Additionally, the show will also continue the major storylines and feuds teased during last week’s show. Here we will take a look at the top four storylines that might be in play on tonight’s WWE SmackDown in Jacksonville, Florida.
4. What’s next for The MFTs?

Last week saw the departure of Tonga Loa and JC Mateo, with the latter’s WWE tenure ending in one year. The exit has now left Solo Sikoa’s MFT with only Talla Tonga and Tama Tonga. WWE last week also teased Solo feuding with Roman Reigns once again as the MFTs attacked the Usos, refusing to leave Jacob Fatu alone until Roman is done with him. Solo also made it clear that Roman is not his Tribal Chief.
Additionally, WWE has also been teasing a turn for Tama Tonga. It remains to be seen if WWE continues to explore this storyline, as it would mean the end of the faction, or they choose to pair the Usos up with Roman once again to take on Sikoa and the MFTs.

3. Danhausen’s mystery tag partner

Last week, The Miz and Kit Wilson baited Danhausen and launched a vicious attack, punishing Danhausen for all the torment and curses. A tag team match was announced later in the show by GM Nick Aldis for the upcoming Backlash.
However, the match will only commence if Danhausen is able to find a partner for the tag team match. The angle has intrigued fans who have been speculating who the mystery partner might be. WWE is likely going to wait for the PLE to reveal the mystery partner, but they might drop a hint on tonight’s show.
2. Rhea Ripley teams up with Charlexa
WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley last week aided Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss from an attack from Fatal Influence (Jacy Jayne, Lainey Reid & Fallon Henley). Ripley already has a score to settle with the faction after they attacked her two weeks ago in their debut show.
While WWE is likely building towards a title showdown between Ripley and Jacy Jayne, they might pivot to include Charlotte Flair. The angle could be teased during the six-woman tag team match tonight.
1. Cody Rhodes vs Gunther
Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes defeated the debutant Ricky Saints last week. However, he was then attacked by Gunther, who sank in the sleeper hold. Gunther is now set to appear tonight to explain his actions.
The attack clearly sets the stage for a feud between the two, potentially leading to a title clash at Clash in Italy or even SummerSlam.
It will also be interesting to see how fans react to Cody Rhodes this time, as he is now up against someone fans genuinely dislike, unlike previous rivals such as Randy Orton, Drew McIntyre, or Kevin Owens, who still enjoyed strong fan support, despite playing heels.
