AEW has seen four former WWE World Champion raising the prestigious AEW World Championship
Winning a world championship in a major organization is one of the most significant accomplishments in professional wrestling. For a limited set of superstars, this achievement has been accomplished not once, but twice—in the two most important wrestling organizations in the world today, WWE and All Elite Wrestling (AEW). WWE is the world’s senior statesman, with a decades-long history and a vast global fan base.
AEW, launched in 2018, immediately established itself as a competitive rival, attracting major attention for its original narrative, star-studded roster, and high-energy events.
On August 25, 2024, AEW held their highly anticipated “All In” event at Wembley Stadium for the second time, with Bryan Danielson, also known as Daniel Bryan during his WWE career, making headlines by capturing the AEW World Championship. Danielson’s triumph not only cemented his place in wrestling history but also made him the fourth wrestler to win both the WWE and AEW Championships.
Here are the top four superstars to win WWE & AEW World Championships:
4. Bryan Danielson aka Daniel Bryan
Daniel Bryan, also known as Bryan Danielson in AEW, is the most recent member of this elite list, having defeated Swerve Strickland at All In 2024. The bout, which headlined the event at Wembley Stadium, was not only for the AEW World Championship but also for Danielson’s career; if he lost, he would have had to retire.
However, Danielson responded to the challenge, winning the championship and demonstrating that he still has much in the tank. Daniel Bryan, a five-time WWE world champion, departed the business in 2021 and has since embarked on a new chapter in his illustrious career with AEW, culminating in his championship triumph at All In.
3. CM Punk
CM Punk is undoubtedly the most contentious and well-known individual to have won both the WWE and AEW Championships. During his tenure in WWE, Punk won five world championships and was known for his defiant “Voice of the Voiceless” image, which resonated with fans across the world.
After quitting WWE in 2014 and taking a long break from professional wrestling, Punk returned to the ring with AEW in 2021, reigniting his career and the wrestling world’s interest in him.
He won the AEW Championship twice during his tenure, however, his career with the company ended suddenly due to backstage troubles and his subsequent termination after All In 2023. Now back with WWE, Punk remains a compelling presence in the industry. He is currently in a high-tension feud with Drew McIntyre.
2. Jon Moxley aka Dean Ambrose
Dean Ambrose, who reinvented himself as Jon Moxley when he joined AEW, was a former WWE Champion who has gone on to have amazing success in AEW. Moxley left WWE in 2019 and made a surprising debut at AEW’s inaugural “Double or Nothing” event.
Since then, he has won four AEW World Championships, demonstrating his harsh wrestling style and nasty demeanor that fans have grown to love so much. Moxley’s transition from WWE to AEW has been defined by his transformation into a more free and vicious version of himself, earning him a reputation as one of the world’s best wrestlers today.
1. Chris Jericho
Chris Jericho became the first AEW World Champion, laying the groundwork for the fledgling promotion’s future. When Jericho joined AEW in 2018, his charm, seasoned expertise, and in-ring adaptability soon established him as the company’s cornerstone.
He won the championship at All Out 2019 and became the face of AEW throughout its early years. Jericho’s illustrious WWE career saw him become a six-time world champion, and his ability to adapt and develop has kept him relevant throughout decades and brands.
