The New Day is one of the greatest factions of all time

The New Day is one of the most famous and distinguished factions in WWE history. They hold multiple records, including the most reigns as SmackDown Tag Team Champions (seven) and the longest tenure as Raw Tag Team Champions (483 days).

They also have the most WWE-branded tag team championship reigns as a team, with 12 (seven SmackDown, four Raw, and one NXT)—the only team WWE recognizes with more is The Dudley Boyz, who have 18, but this includes their eight Extreme Championship Wrestling and one World Championship Wrestling tag team titles.

While performing as a trio, The New Day defended their tag team titles under the Freebird rule, with all three members acknowledged as champions.

When was The New Day formed?

The stable was prominently created by Xavier Woods, Big E, and Kofi Kingston on the Raw episode of July 21, 2014, but made their debut as The New Day on the SmackDown edition of November 28, 2014. They won the WWE Tag Team Championship for the first time at Extreme Rules in April 2015.

Their second reign, which began at that year’s SummerSlam in August, was the longest in the title’s history, the first to last more than a year, and the last with the title serving as the sole tag team championship on WWE’s main roster, as it was renamed Raw Tag Team Championship in September 2016 after the SmackDown Tag Team Championship was created.

In December 2016, they set the record for the longest male tag team championship reign in WWE history at 483 days (breaking Demolition’s 28-year-old record of 478 days with WWE’s original World Tag Team Championship), as well as the longest reigning champions for any WWE championship in the previous two decades; both accomplishments have since been surpassed.

Here are The New Day’s top five matches in WWE history:

5. The New Day vs The Bar – SmackDown Live (08/07/2018)

The Bar was one of the finest tag teams in recent WWE history. The pair served to demonstrate Cesaro’s underappreciation and potential, as well as Sheamus’ tremendous wrestling abilities. At the time, SmackDown Live was putting on incredible matches every week, and this one was no exception.

The teams competed in the Tag Team Tournament Finals for a championship battle against The Bludgeon Brothers at SummerSlam. Big E and Kingston won by reversing Cesaro’s cross-face and turning it into Midnight Hour.

4. The New Day vs AJ Styles & Chris Jericho – Monday Night RAW (03/07/2016)

During their brief run as Y2AJ, AJ Styles and Chris Jericho faced The New Day for the RAW Tag Team Championships. This was a treat for Monday Night RAW viewers, as both teams put on a great show, with this bout emphasizing Styles’ abilities and predicting what he would do.

The New Day won and held their tag team championships. However, this was the night Jericho turned on Styles, setting up their ultimate confrontation at WrestleMania 32.

3. The New Day vs The Usos vs The Lucha Dragons – TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs 2015

WWE has been attempting to recapture the memories of the Triple Threat Tag Team TLC bouts between the Hardys, Dudleys, Edge, and Chrisitan during the attitude period. Although this match is not precisely that, it pays honor to the match type while still adding their spin to it.

All three teams had their places, the most famous being Kalisto’s Salida Del Sol from the middle ladder on Jimmy Uso, who went up another ladder. Despite their appearance, The Lucha Dragons did not win, as The New Day retained the WWE Tag Team Championships.

2. The New Day vs The Usos – SummerSlam Kickoff 2017

Although this bout took place at SummerSlam, it was not included on the main program. The New Day defended their SmackDown Tag Team Championships against the Usos yet again. Putting a match like this on the kickoff instead of the main card is unacceptable, and the teams demonstrated why they deserved to be on the main card.

Fortunately, the contest lasted over 20 minutes, giving them enough time to put up a classic. It was a rare instance when Woods and Big E formed the team, with Kingston on the outside. However, it was not The New Day’s night, as The Usos defeated them to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.

1. The New Day vs The Usos – Hell In A Cell 2017

It’s only natural that The New Day’s finest match comes against their main opponents. The Usos and The New Day have had many fantastic matches, including a few on our list, but this one takes the cake as the pinnacle of their animosity.

The four were coming off a fantastic bout at SummerSlam that year and managed to outdo themselves in this nail-biting, intense caged match. Regardless of the rules, it appears like these sides have a purpose in mind every time they square off to have a contest like this, and the viewers get rewarded each time.
