The main event of WrestleMania 40 saw many legends returning
WrestleMania 40 was a night to remember, packed with surprises, iconic moments, and the return of some of WWE’s biggest legends.
The main event, which saw Cody Rhodes finally dethrone Roman Reigns to become the Undisputed WWE Champion, was a rollercoaster of emotions. However, the match wasn’t without its twists and turns, with interferences from The Rock, John Cena, Solo Sikoa, The Usos, and most unexpectedly, The Undertaker.
The return of The Undertaker was a massive highlight, but as WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H revealed, it wasn’t easy to make it happen. Speaking on The Roommates Show with Brunson and Josh Hart, Triple H shared the challenges involved in convincing the legendary Deadman to make an appearance.
“It took us forever to get him to do that thing,” Triple H admitted. “A lot of that stuff comes together at the tail end. When I first called him for it, he was like, ‘I don’t know. I don’t think I want to do it.’ I told him, ‘80,000 people are going to go absolutely insane.’ But it took some time to get him on board.”
Triple H even revealed that it wasn’t just him working to bring The Undertaker back—The Rock himself got involved. “Rock had to call him. Everybody had to call him to get him to finally acquiesce to do it. When he retired, he wanted to be done. He didn’t want to come out with the hat and jacket; those are retired. He just wanted it to be over.”
Interestingly, The Undertaker wasn’t even part of the original WrestleMania 40 plans. According to reports from Dave Meltzer, Stone Cold Steve Austin was initially slated to play a pivotal role in the main event. However, WWE and Austin couldn’t reach a financial agreement, leaving the spot open for The Undertaker’s return.
While Stone Cold hasn’t competed since WrestleMania 38, where he faced Kevin Owens, he has hinted that CM Punk would be his ideal opponent if he ever returned. Although that dream match seems unlikely, the idea still excites fans.
