NXT offered some good matches this week.

The June 25 edition of WWE NXT was a pivotal show as it set the stage for the highly anticipated NXT Heatwave. With a mix of high-stakes matches and intense storylines, the night promised to deliver excitement and drama.

Trick Williams faced off against Shawn Spears in a non-title bout, following last week’s chaotic finish. Tony D’Angelo put his Heritage Cup on the line against former champion Nathan Frazer, while a Tag Team Turmoil match determined the next contenders for the NXT Tag Team Championships.

Sol Ruca and Arianna Grace were battled for a shot at Kelani Jordan’s Women’s North American Championship, and Wes Lee looked to put Joe Coffey behind him before challenging Oba Femi. In another key storyline, Damon Kemp faced Tavion Heights, who hoped to earn a spot in No Quarter Catch Crew.

With such a stacked card, the show was a crucial step on the road to Heatwave, showcasing the best of WWE NXT’s talent and setting up some exciting future matchups.

Here’s a breakdown of the top three things we loved and hated about this week’s WWE NXT.

Loved: Nathan Frazer vs Tony D’Angelo – Heritage Cup match

Tony D’Angelo and Nathan Frazer put on a thrilling and tough Heritage Cup duel. An exciting fight was set up by Frazer’s fast roll-up in the opening round and D’Angelo’s spine buster counterattack. Frazer’s heel instincts and D’Angelo’s tenacity were on full display throughout the bout, which was an intriguing battle.

Though the first few rounds had a strange rhythm, the third fall was a master lesson in narrative and action within the ring. Both guys proved why they are among the best in NXT, and D’Angelo’s win cemented his developing status as a formidable opponent.

Hated: Underwhelming Contender Match – Sol Ruca vs Arianna Grace

It was a poor contest between Arianna Grace and Sol Ruca to determine who is the top challenger for the Women’s North American Championship. Ruca gave a disorganized performance that lacked cohesiveness and had several awkward moments. Grace tried her hardest to save the match, but it was not to be. Given the enormous stakes involved, the fight was disappointing and did little to raise interest in Ruca’s next encounter at Heatwave vs Kelani Jordan.

Loved: Wes Lee dominating

Wes Lee’s decisive victory over Joe Coffey was a standout moment. Lee’s focused and determined approach allowed him to wipe out Coffey quickly, setting him up as a credible challenger for the North American Championship. While the match was shockingly short, it effectively showcased Lee’s potential as a top contender and added excitement for his upcoming match against Oba Femi at Heatwave.

Hated: Overbooked main event

Overbooking ruined the main event between Trick Williams and Shawn Spears. After beginning as a competitive match, there were several interruptions and the match swiftly turned chaotic. The bout was unduly complicated by Oro Mensah’s involvement, Ethan Page’s commentary, and Brooks Jensen’s intervention and subsequent attack on Williams. What should have been a strong main event was overshadowed by the excessive interference.

Loved: No. 1 Contender Tag Team Turmoil

The night’s high point was the Tag Team Turmoil bout, which had outstanding performances from several teams. Chase U, Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne, Edris Enofé and Malik Blade, and all put on fantastic performances.

The spectators were gripped throughout the whole fight by the action-packed bout’s rapid-fire pace and several memorable moments, such as Enofé’s reversal of the Bitter End and Bate’s spectacular vertical suplex. Even with a few dubious booking choices, the bout demonstrated the caliber of skill in NXT’s tag team division.

Hated: Roxanne Perez squashed match quickly

It seemed like a wasted chance for Roxanne Perez to defeated Karmen Petrovic so quickly. Petrovic had the opportunity to gain momentum from the match, but Perez outmatched her handily. In addition, Lola Vice didn’t do enough to establish herself as a serious danger with her forced post-match attack and stealing of the NXT Women’s Championship. The scene didn’t feel essential, and it didn’t significantly further the plot.
