AJ Lee’s return looks to be getting real!

The buzz around AJ Lee’s potential WWE comeback is getting louder, with fresh reports indicating that creative talks about her return are further along than ever before.

Fightful Select revealed that there has been “more traction on it of late than in previous years,” while Wrestling Observer’s Bryan Alvarez went even further, outright confirming WWE’s plan for a blockbuster mixed tag match at Wrestlepalooza.

The finish to WWE Clash in Paris added heavy fuel to the fire. Seth Rollins retained his World Heavyweight Championship after Becky Lynch delivered a low blow to CM Punk, sparking instant fan speculation about Punk possibly teaming with his wife, AJ Lee, to take on Rollins and Lynch.

Reports point to her in-ring return at Wrestlepalooza

Multiple outlets are now suggesting that Lee will return as soon as this week. Fightful noted that WWE is hopeful her comeback won’t just be a one-off appearance, but even if it is, they would still consider it a major win.

Bryan Alvarez has gone further, saying flat-out that AJ Lee is returning and will wrestle alongside Punk against Rollins and Lynch at Wrestlepalooza on September 20.

Punk himself teased the idea on Raw when he promised he would appear on SmackDown in Chicago this Friday, September 5, in his hometown, and also where the two live. The timing couldn’t be more convenient for a surprise appearance.

Adding to the speculation, Punk posted an Instagram story with the caption: “okay… you asked for it.” Combined with chants for Lee during his heated segment with Becky Lynch on Raw, the anticipation is reaching a fever pitch.

AJ Lee’s current status

Lee retired from WWE in 2015 at the age of 28, citing cervical spine issues as the reason. For years, her return seemed impossible. However, sources close to WWE say they’re not overly concerned about her long layoff, pointing to her strong physical condition and CM Punk’s own successful return after a long absence as a model.

While she previously worked with WOW Women of Wrestling in a non-wrestling role, WWE higher-ups believe the current story is the perfect opportunity to bring her back. Whether her in-ring run extends beyond Wrestlepalooza or not, officials see this as a historic moment that could elevate both the Rollins-Punk rivalry and the women’s division.
