KO was at the end of a close defeat to Cody Rhodes
WWE fans were left stunned when Kevin Owens ambushed Cody Rhodes after Saturday Night’s Main Event went off the air. The American Nightmare had just successfully defended the Undisputed WWE Championship against Owens in a hard-fought match that featured the iconic Winged Eagle design for one night only.
As Cody Rhodes celebrated his victory, Owens attacked him and delivered a devastating Package Piledriver a move that has been banned in WWE due to its dangerous nature. The move, which involves dropping an opponent head-first into the mat, has caused serious injuries in the past, including “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s infamous neck injury in 1997.
Fan footage shared on social media shows Cody Rhodes being stretchered out of the arena following the attack. Meanwhile, Owens stole the winged eagle championship belt and left the ring with it. On his way up the ramp, Owens had a heated confrontation with Triple H, who was visibly furious about the unsanctioned attack.
WWE made an officially comment on the incident on X, they wrote, “After the attack by Kevin Owens, Cody Rhodes received immediate medical attention and had to be loaded onto a stretcher.”
This shocking turn of events continues Owens’ recent trend of blurring the lines between scripted drama and unscripted chaos. Just last month, he used the same Package Piledriver on Randy Orton during an episode of SmackDown, leading to speculation about WWE’s evolving stance on the move.
Rhodes’ getting beaten up and Owens’ leaving with the title have added another layer of intensity to their ongoing feud. Fans are now eagerly awaiting WWE’s response and what this could mean for Rhodes’ reign as champion and his rivalry with Owens.
Elsewhere on Saturday Night’s Main Event, other highlights included Chelsea Green becoming the inaugural Women’s United States Champion, Liv Morgan retaining her Women’s World Championship against IYO SKY, and Drew McIntyre defeating Sami Zayn in the opening bout.
