“The Second City Saint” has some names for his Mt. Rushmore
CM Punk spoke on ESPN’s First Take on Tuesday, just before his highly anticipated showdown against Drew McIntyre at WWE SummerSlam on Saturday, and shared some of his wrestling fan favorites.
When asked by first take panelist and former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky to select his top five wrestlers of all time, Punk named “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Eddie Guerrero, Harley Race, Terry Funk, and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.
Given that CM Punk was born in 1978, it’s no wonder that his ranking was highly skewed toward wrestlers who were among the top performers in the 1980s and 1990s.
Punk first included Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat on his list, but when asked how he first got into wrestling, he discovered he had left off Piper.
The 45-year-old veteran credited Piper for turning him become a wrestling fan, citing his trash-talking abilities and the fact that he excelled despite not being one of the largest or strongest wrestlers of his day.
Perhaps the most fascinating member on Punk’s list was Austin, as Punk vs. Austin is regarded as an all-time fantasy match by many wrestling fans and is still technically possible.
CM Punk and Steve Austin had things rolling against each other
In 2012, WWE staged a sit-down interview with Punk and Austin, moderated by Hall of Fame announcer Jim Ross, in advance of the release of the WWE ’13 video game.
Punk and Austin worked an angle together, which piqued fans’ interest in the idea of them wrestling one other; however, Punk left WWE in January 2014, and the match never materialized.
Austin appeared to be gone for good following his final match at WrestleMania 19 in 2003, but two years later, at WrestleMania 38, he surprised the wrestling world by returning to face Kevin Owens.
CM Punk hilariously corrects his top five wrestlers list
The 45-year-old tore his triceps during the Men’s Royal Rumble match earlier this year, but he revealed on WWE RAW last Monday night that he has been allowed to return to action. He’ll face Drew McIntyre in the premium live event this weekend, with Seth Rollins serving as Special Guest Referee. CM Punk spoke on ESPN’s First Take today and was asked about his top five wrestlers of all time.
The wrestlers’ top five list included Terry Funk, Harley Race, Steve Austin, Eddie Guerrero & Ricky Steamboat or Roddy Piper. However, CM Punk failed to include Bret Hart on his list and turned to Instagram to amend his error. The former AEW Champion revealed a revised list of his top five wrestlers, which only included Bret Hart.
