Cody Rhodes is all set to face Randy Orton at WWE Night of Champions 2025
Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton are set to meet one-on-one at WWE Night of Champions 2025 in a blockbuster King of the Ring tournament final.
While the Undisputed WWE Championship isn’t at stake, the winner will earn a title shot at SummerSlam, giving the contest massive implications. But this match also marks a personal crossroads, one that has been over a decade in the making.
A history forged in Legacy
Rhodes and Orton first crossed paths in 2007 when a fresh-faced Cody Rhodes debuted against The Viper. What started as a rivalry quickly turned into an alliance.
Alongside Ted DiBiase Jr., they formed the infamous faction Legacy, a stable of second-generation stars led by Orton, who often used Rhodes and DiBiase as enforcers to protect his spot atop the food chain.
Together, they wreaked havoc on Raw and even feuded with the likes of D-Generation X. However, as is the fate of most factions, Legacy ultimately imploded.
Orton’s dominance and control pushed Rhodes and DiBiase to break away, culminating in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 26 where Orton, once again, stood tall over his protégés.
The last showdown time Cody Rhodes faced Randy Orton was in 2013
Fast forward a few years to 2013, and tensions between Rhodes and Orton reignited. This time, the stakes were even higher.
On the September 2, 2013 episode of Raw, Triple H put Cody’s career on the line in a match against Orton. If Rhodes lost, he’d be fired. Unfortunately for Cody, he came up short and, in storyline, was “fired” by Triple H.
While that match was mainly a way to write Rhodes off TV for his real-life wedding, it carried emotional weight. Rhodes had challenged the authority of the company, and it was poetic that the man who represented the “system”, Randy Orton, was the one to cut him down. That marked their last singles match before their upcoming battle in Riyadh.
Cody Rhodes & Randy Orton are all set to write a new chapter
Now, nearly 12 years since their last singles clash, Rhodes and Orton are set to collide once again. Only this time, the context is vastly different.
Rhodes has evolved into “The American Nightmare,” one of WWE’s top stars, while Orton is a 14-time world champion looking to cement his legacy even further.
Their collision course has excited fans who’ve followed their intertwined journeys for nearly two decades. And with a SummerSlam title match on the line, the stakes are arguably higher than ever before. It’s a career-defining match for both men, one filled with history, emotion, and a chance to write the final chapter of their storied rivalry.
