World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk is set to defend the title against ‘The OTC’ Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 42. Reigns bagged the win in the 2026 men’s Rumble match to punch his ticket to the ‘Grandest Stage.’
Reigns then picked Punk as his opponent for Mania, making the title clash official. This will be the first time in many years that the World Heavyweight title will headline the ‘Grandest Stage.’ Ahead of the clash between the two megastars, let us take a look at the last time the title main evented Mania.
The title has main-evented WrestleMania only three times
Notably, the upcoming main event clash will be the fourth time the WWE World Heavyweight title will be defended in the main event of Mania.
The first time the main evented Mania was during the 20th edition at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 2004. The match saw Triple H defend the title in a triple threat match against Chris Benoit and Shawn Michaels.
On the other hand, the title’s last main evented the PLE during the 24th edition at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida, on March 30, 2008, when The Undertaker defeated Edge by submission to become the new Champion.
Notably, the second time it mainevented Mania was during the 21st edition, where Triple H and Batista clashed in singles action, with Batista defeating Triple H to capture the title.
Now the stage is set for the fourth time in history, as the prestigious World Heavyweight Championship is set to headline WrestleMania 42 this April.
The match will mark a rematch from their last encounter in 2025, which also took place at WrestleMania. That clash was a triple threat match involving Seth Rollins, who emerged victorious after Paul Heyman betrayed both CM Punk and Roman Reigns, sealing the outcome in dramatic fashion.
