Will WWE offer free first-hour SummerSlam simulcast on ESPN like WrestleMania 42 in the United States?

SummerSlam 2026 will emanate from Minneapolis this weekend.
The 2026 edition of SummerSlam is right around the corner. ‘The Biggest Party of the Summer’ will air as a two-night spectacle on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, 2026, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
WWE has revealed the full lineup for both nights of the PLE as they gear up to deliver the PLE this weekend. Fans in the United States can tune into ESPN, while international fans can tune into Netflix (excluding select markets) to catch all the action live from 6 PM ET.
Additionally, WWE in recent times has given fans in the United States an opportunity to watch the opening hour of PLEs for free simulcast on ESPN’s linear networks, while the rest of the PLE aired on ESPN Unlimited.
The first hour usually featured two major matches to drive subscriptions for ESPN’s paid streaming services and increase viewership among casual fans. However, WWE has not made any similar announcement, making many fans wonder if SummerSlam will simulcast on ESPN TV like recent PLEs or not.

WWE and ESPN may have changed strategy for SummerSlam
On that note, Dave Meltzer in WON’s The Daily Update theorized that WWE and ESPN may have concluded that offering one hour of a premium live event for free on ESPN was negatively impacting subscriptions. As a result, they have decided not to provide a free hour simulcast for either night of SummerSlam.
WWE initially started the offering for US fans during WrestleMania 42 in April and continued with the following Premium Live Events. The last PLE, Night of Champions, which aired on June 27, utilized the exact same first-hour linear simulcast strategy.
According to an earlier report from WrestleVotes, ESPN reached out to WWE about adding more matches to Night of Champions in an effort to make the paid portion of the event more appealing.
This saw the show feature a total of six matches instead of four, which has become the norm in recent times. Two matches aired for free, while the rest of the four matches aired exclusively on ESPN’s paid platform. Now it seems like WWE and ESPN have changed their strategy once again, dropping the free first-hour simulcast for SummerSlam.

The 39th edition will air as a two-night spectacle on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, 2026, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Where can fans tune in to catch the action live?
Fans can catch all the action from 6 PM ET/3 PM PT (or 3:30 AM IST on Sunday, August 2, and Monday, August 3, respectively) on Netflix internationally (excluding select markets) and on the ESPN App in the United States.
